ENVIROFACTS contains the public information (FOIA information) from several EPA database systems including: FINDS, PCS, TRIS, CERCLIS, and RCRIS. The Web pages supply a description of each system, information on the data elements which are part of each system, and an HTML Form query page allowing the databases to be searched by City or Zipcode for a list of facilities. New, more flexible, query forms are planned for incorporation into the Web pages during October 1995. The database was initially released March 31, 1995 and the capabilities in the new forms have been based on the public feedback to date.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Enviromapper uses innovative Web technology to view and locate environmental information on "drinking water, toxic and air releases, hazardous waste, water discharge permits, and Superfund sites." Thumbnail US map images expand with a click to show facilities regulated by the EPA, information about local watersheds, and local national priority list sites. Users may zoom in by clicking on a map or by entering a relevant state, county, city, watershed, zip code, or EPA region. The site also offers OpenLink, a facility that allows any Webpage to set up a hyperlink to Enviromapper. Instructions on how to use OpenLink are included. [KR]

If you're an environmentally active resident of Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Texas, or Colorado, load up your garbage and bring it to the Environmental Recycling Hotline site on the World Wide Web. When you arrive at the site, enter your zip code and language preference (English or Spanish), then click on the button that reads "Please tell me about recycling in my area." From the next menu, select the option that mentions drop-off facilities. A listing of about 17 items appears on-screen, each one describing where you can drop off particular recyclables in your neighborhood. Listings include drop-off centers for scrap metal, car batteries, office paper, aluminum, glass, newspaper, plastic bags, oil, automobile tires, and more. Once you've obtained the information you need, head back to the main menu and check out some information sheets about hazardous household wastes, buying recycled products, and the 3 R's reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The first item is a recently released technical report on US light duty automotive technology and fuel economy trends for model years 1975 through 1999. A Fact Sheet, the main body of the report, and appendices are available in .pdf format. The latter two can also be downloaded as zipped WordPerfect files. Among other things, the report reveals that average fuel economy has declined consistently since the late 1980s and now stands at its lowest level since 1980. The primary source of this decline, the report states, is the increasing market share of light trucks, which have a lower average fuel economy than cars. The second resource is the EPA's main fuel economy site. It features a .pdf version of the agency's 2000 Model Year Fuel Economy Guide; a search engine that allows users to find the MPG of any 2000 model car and compare it with others, search by MPG, and view the best and worst

Late for work? Forget to do the homework? Since humans began taking on responsibilities, theyâ ve been making up excuses for not doing them. In this Canadian-based Web site, four sections display numerous amusing, often hysterically funny excuses. In the Excuses Teachers Hear section, one story is about a guy who was late because his refrigerator was possessed, he needed to wait for an exorcist. Submissions to the Excuse Generator make up the page content and can be e-mailed to the site using a simple form. No fancy visuals exist here, but the excuses provide plenty of color.

"Explorations" is intended to be an "interactive journey into the world of computational research for a wide range of viewers." Topics include cosmology, fluid flow, biodiversity, molecular biochemistry, ocean resources and ecosystems, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fusion, among others. What ties all these topics together in this virtual book is the use of computer generated visualizations to demonstrate various concepts. "Explorations" is readable only through Netscape 2.0 and incorporates frames, animations, images, and VRML files. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), in its Digital Classroom (discussed in the November 18, 1997 issue of the Scout Report for Social Sciences ), offers a glimpse of its rich holdings at this site concerning the Amistad case, a Supreme Court case in 1839 that involved a group of illegally-captured Africans who had seized their captors' ship and killed the captain. Original hand-written documents from this case, defended by John Quincy Adams, have been digitized and can be viewed. Each section provides a well-written summary clarifying the historical context of the story. There are several thousand science fiction and fantasy fans worldwide who are finding it easier to communicate now that the Internet is in place. To help facilitate this communication, John Lorentz and Laurie Mann have created the Fannish E-mail Directory. Individuals and/or organizations with a specific interest in science fiction/fantasy can send in their e-mail address and be listed. The URL given above points to the Web version of the directory, which can be searched and viewed in a variety of ways: by last name, geographic location, or organizational affiliation. Mann, who maintains the Web version, has also begun listing World Wide Web addresses in addition to e-mail addresses. These sites offer a wealth of additional information on science fiction and fantasy on the Internet.
