The Encoded Archival Description Working Group at the Library of Congress has announced the first release of a search system for archival finding aids at the LOC. These finding aids are extremely useful to researchers because they offer more detailed information on primary source material than standard catalog records, often providing "information about a collection's provenance and the conditions under which it may be accessed or copied; biographical or organizational histories related to the collection; a note describing the scope and content of the collection; and progressively detailed descriptions of the parts or components of the collection together with the corresponding call numbers [or] container numbers." The aids have been encoded in SGML using Encoded Archival Description (EAD), and search returns are available in both HTML and SGML. Users can search by keyword or browse by s

Though still under development, an experimental online public access catalog for the Library of Congress is now available, providing access to over 4.8 million records (out of 27 million) from the Library of Congress. Compared to LOCIS, LC's command-driven catalog, this new format is easier to navigate, allowing users to search by keyword, author, title, ISBN, and LC class searches, as well as limit by format, date, publisher, and language. An exciting new feature is the ability to sort results by date, title, or LC call number, either in ascending or descending order. Individual records are displayed in hypertext format, making it possible to jump to other works on the same subject, call number, or by same author, as well as to link to online texts and images, and view the MARC (MAchine Readable-Cataloging) formats of any record. The Library of Congress (LOC) has organized its digitized American Memory collection in a way designed to fit the needs of students and educators. The new site is called the LOC Learning Page. Resources to help educators incorporate the Library's primary sources into their curriculum are provided on the "Educator's Page," as well as answers to technical questions about the online materials. The electronic collections are arranged alphabetically by keyword, as well as by media type. The "Pathfinder Pages" arrange the collection by types of events, people, places, and topics. The entire site is searchable, and under "Search Suggestion List" a synonym list for key word searching has been provided.
