The White House Web site has made access to current U.S. economic and social data much easier by establishing the Economic and Social Statistics Briefing Rooms. The power of these sites is that they not only offer brief statistics and charts, but that they also link to the agency that is responsible for the data, allowing interested users to obtain much more detailed data when available. The Economic Briefing Room contains current data on income, output, employment, unemployment and earnings, production and business activity, prices, money, credit and securities markets, transportation, and international statistics. The Social Briefing Room contains data on crime, demographics, education, and health. These two sites make the distinction between agencies that produce particular types of data invisible to the user. Economic Statistics Briefing Room: Social Statistics Briefing Room

At the heart of this new World Health Organization report is the advocacy of DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course) as a strategy for "reversing the course of a frightening global TB epidemic." It contains a listing of the benefits of DOTS, the elements of the DOTS strategy, and information on the thirteen countries (containing 75% of the world's TB cases) that "will largely determine whether the battle against TB will be won or lost." The site also contains information on how to obtain the "official paper copy" of the report. WHO's Global Tuberculosis Page contains other TB-related information, including earlier TB reports and TB/HIV: A Clinical Manual (in Adobe Acrobat [.pdf] format only). [JS]

If you've decided this is the year to try something in the yard other than lawn, the Wild Ones Handbook is a good place to start. Wild Ones is a non-profit group that began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1977 It promotes and supports the use of natural landscaping as an alternative to lawns. The Handbook contains short essays written by natural landscaping designers and enthusiasts, as well as professional prairie nursery representatives. Topics covered include background information on prairies, how not to aggravate neighbors and village officials, preparing a yard for planting and landscaping for wildlife. Several of the essays provide lists of suggested plants native to the Midwest. The online version of the Wild Ones Handbook is a cooperative effort of Wild Ones - Natural Landscapers, Ltd., and the US Envrionmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes National Program (GLNP). [AG]

With the Windows Media Player 6.2 Beta, Microsoft enters the high quality, compressed digital music fray. Not only does Microsoft's new media player support numerous media formats, but it also has several novel features. It supports the new MS Audio 4.0 format, which claims to provide MP3-quality sound at half the size of MP3 files, and it offers "intelligent streaming," which increases the probability of a smooth streamed media experience. Somewhat less wonderful for the end-user may be its support for the Windows Media Rights Manager, which provides piracy protection and license control. Though similar to RealPlayer, the Windows Media Player 6.2 Beta's interesting and unique features make it worth checking out. The player runs on Win95/98/NT and is free to download and use. [CL]

Salem Village, now Danvers, Massachusetts, witnessed an infamous outbreak of witchcraft accusations and trials after some local girls fell ill in March, 1692. In the aftermath, 18 people were hanged as witches. This site, created by the Danvers Archival Center and hosted by the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia (discussed in the March 6, 1998 Scout Report ), offers a number of primary documents and other materials related to the Witchcraft Outbreak of 1692 that will interest historians, students, and general users alike. First and foremost of these are sizable collections of verbatim transcripts from the 1692 trials and narratives from witchcraft cases between 1648 and 1706. Both collections may be browsed or searched (separately or jointly) using several modifiers. Additional features at the site include the digitized full text of a 1693 treatise on witchcraft, a brie
