A little life from the old web

Sodaconstructor let people make moving creatures from dots, springs and sine-wave muscles. It was created by Ed Burton at Soda. The community went far beyond simple walkers, inventing folding structures and intricate mechanisms.

What you are playing

These are the twelve models from the original bundled collection captured in September 2001. The recovered original model file matches the Internet Archive’s recorded checksum. This is a small surviving collection, not the complete community Sodazoo. Individual model authors are not recorded in the recovered bundle.

Original software and models: Soda Creative Technologies Ltd. Browser compatibility player and interface: GE97, 2026. The original work remains credited to its creators; GE97 does not claim ownership of the historical models.

How the movement was restored

The Java browser plug-in has been replaced with a small JavaScript player. Original model coordinates, spring connections, muscle settings, gravity and friction were decoded from the preserved binary file. The physics was checked against the recovered 2001 Java implementation for all twelve models over 1,000 simulation steps, with a maximum sampled position difference below 0.00000001 pixel.

The viewing area is fixed at 650 × 430 simulation units and scales to your screen. The player uses 125 simulation steps per second; a slow device can run more slowly. Long-running chaotic motion can diverge through floating-point rounding. The touch controls and this cabinet interface are modern additions. Editing, account creation, saving to the old server and the larger community database are not restored.
