The first national guide to information on the success rate of 281 fertility clinics around the country resides at this site. Issued by the US Centers for Disease Control, the full text of the report offers a clinic-by-clinic guide to summary statistics on the success of numerous methods of assisted reproductive technology (ART) including a variety of in vitro techniques. Based on 59,142 treatments that resulted in 11,315 live births in 1995, the report contains information on percentages of multiple births, information about the diagnoses of patients and age-specific success rates. This report is a response to a 1992 Congressional measure requiring the CDC to publish fertility clinic statistics for consumers. [DF]

As part of the 1996 California Reading Initiative, the state's Department of Education has produced this advisory, the purpose of which "is to provide guidance in the development and implementation of a balanced, comprehensive reading program in prekindergarten through grade three." The advisory is made up of two parts: the Reading Program, and Instructional Guidance and Support. The first focuses on instruction, including skills, diagnosis, assessment, and early intervention strategies. The second discusses "the planning necessary to support classroom implementation." The report is an interesting glimpse into the strategy of the US' largest state toward teaching the most fundamental of skills. [JS]

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), part of the National Center for Education Statistics, has recently made available (in Adobe Acrobat [.pdf] format only) this assessment of the educational progress of students at grades 4, 8, and 12, in both public and private schools. "The national results...describe students' mathematics achievement at each grade and within various subgroups of the general population. State-level results for grades 4 and 8 are presented for individual states...that chose to participate in the 1996 state assessment." Among the major findings: students' scores on the NAEP mathematics scale increased for all three grades, and students' performance increased at three different proficiency levels between 1990 and 1996. Money magazine has added a new wrinkle to its annual Best Places to Live rankings. The controversial, yet fascinating, rankings no longer provide one single list. Lists are now broken out by size within geographical area, ending the possibility for any one city to create billboards claiming itself the best place to live. In this way, the rankings hope to "narrow the scope and rank each place within its own region and population group," while also guaranteeing that no city can finish lower than 50th. Each city ranking is accompanied by a statistical snapshot, and there is an explanatory paragraph for the winners. The site also allows users to compare costs of living between any two cities and find the best city for them based on 63 factors in nine categories. Rankings for 1997 and 1996 are still available. On November 3, the US Census Bureau released 1996 poverty estimates for three age groups of children and for people of all ages, in each state and the District of Columbia. "The 1996 estimates include the numbers of poor people, poor children under 18, poor children ages 5 to 17 living with a family and poor children under age 5," as well as estimates of median household income. These estimates are used in administering federal programs and allocating federal funds to local jurisdictions. Access to the data is available via the State and County Estimates link on the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates homepage. Late every November the Chancellor of the Exchequer presents a major budget address to the United Kingdom Parliament that "reviews the nation's economic performance, announces the Government's plans for public spending for the coming year, and explains how the Government proposes to raise revenue to cover its spending, and what changes it plans to make to the tax system." The HM Treasury web site contains the speech and the Financial Statement and Budget Report (Budget Red Book), which summarizes the budget, contains economic forecasts, and analyzes public finances, among other topics. The United Nations Population Information Network (POPIN) recently released the 1998 revised estimates and projections for the world population, which currently stands at 5.9 billion and expands at 1.33 percent per year (about 78 million). This site offers a briefing packet which highlights all of the major findings of the 1998 revision with text and tables. POPIN reports a declining global fertility rate, but perhaps their most striking finding concerns the effect of AIDS/HIV on African population rates, especially in sub-Saharan countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe, where one in four and one in five adults respectively are infected. The first is highlighted by the 1996 Occupational Employment Statistics Survey, which differs from previous surveys in that it includes wage data by occupation for the first time. The site contains a description of the survey and complete national and state data for 760 occupations in seven major areas. The American Verse Project, a part of the University of Michigan Humanities Text Initiative, is assembling an electronic archive of volumes of American poetry prior to 1920. Full texts are being made available in both HTML and SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). At present, over twenty five verse volumes are available. Authors include William Cullen Bryant, Emily Dickinson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and George Sylvester Viereck, among others. HTML versions include scanned images of title pages, verso pages, and tables of contents. Volumes can be viewed in their entirety or by table of contents entries. There is an option for revealing line groupings and line identifications. The entire collection is searchable, with Boolean and proximity searching available. For SGML versions, you will need an SGML viewer attached to your browser.

Each window can contain different Websites, and the user can choose to display links from one window in the other window or vice-versa. This is very useful when exploring a list of hits from a search engine, for example. Browse2000 also organizes bookmarks in a searchable database and allows the user to select up to 200 pages from the bookmark list to load simultaneously, so that the pages can be browsed later without waiting for each page. USAID, the US Agency for International Development, has recently released two key documents online. The first, the agency's annual report, can be downloaded as a single document or by chapter in .pdf format. The report evaluates the progress of USAID programs in over 100 countries worldwide. Chapters explore topics such as Economic Growth and Agricultural Development; Population, Health and Nutrition; Environment; and Humanitarian Assistance. Annexes include USAID Agency Evaluations and Country Development Trends. The second document is offered only in its entirety as a .pdf file.
