The US Library of Congress's American Memory project has premiered a new collection and substantially updated a second. The first is an online exhibit showcasing the Library's extensive African-American collections. It traces the African-American experience through nine chronological periods that document the long and difficult path from slavery to Reconstruction to the fight for civil and social equality in the twentieth century. This virtual exhibit is similar to a physical one in that the emphasis is on the historical materials rather than explanatory text. Users will find images of a wide range of rare books, manuscripts, government documents, sheet music, movie posters, and photographs. This site, provided by Roy Davies and based on Glyn Davies' book A History of Money from Ancient Times to the Present Day (U of Wales Press, 1996), is divided into eighteen chronological sections. As might be expected, the scope of each section tightens as the chronology approaches the present (100 years by the 16th Century, 50 by the 18th, and 20 by the 19th). Each year (or range of years), contains an international monetary highlight, and most contain short annotations. In addition, citations to page numbers guide those who wish to refer to the printed book. The site also links to a page of essays related to the book. Recently released online, this document from the US Department of Health and Human Services is the first annual report on the progress of the National Strategy to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, introduced in January 1997. The report does contain some good news: teen birth rates have decreased nationally and in all states since 1991, falling twelve percent nationally and sixteen percent or more in seventeen states. The report contains statistics and analysis of teen birth and pregnancy rates, by age and race. It also details the strategies and partnerships forged by the HHS to continue this encouraging trend. Appendixes include Teenage Birth Rates in the US: National and State Trends, 1990-96; an overview of various HHS teen pregnancy provision programs; and Teen Parent Provisions by state. [MD]

Euclid's Elements contains the text of the thirteen books of this classical treatise, illustrated with geometry applets. A Short Course in Trigonometry is divided into thirteen sections (twelve are currently available), accompanied by instructive Java applets and selected answered exercises. Robert Beard, Professor and Chair of the Russian Program at Bucknell University, has compiled this page of links to online grammar resources for more than twenty languages. The criteria for inclusion is that the grammars "are accurate and useful for learning the language they describe." Most languages are represented by a single site, and only a few have two or three sites listed; each entry provides the name of the resource author, but no further information. The offerings range from "Survival Bengali" to "An Integral Dutch Course" to Professor Beard's own "On-line Russian Reference Grammar." Most of the sites were developed or are supported by university faculty around the world; some are still being completed, but most are fairly polished and inviting to the language learner. Robert Beard, Director of the Russian and Linguistics Programs at Bucknell University, maintains this dictionary meta-site, a site that contains pointers to dictionaries in over 130 languages, many of them bilingual (English and the language of the dictionary). Included are "artificial" languages such as Esperanto and three different fictional languages from the Star Trek TV show. All levity aside, this extremely useful site offers multilingual and specialized dictionaries, thesauri, vocabulary aids, and a recently-added list of online language identifiers.
