If you are just getting started searching for fine art on the Web and you are looking for works by a particular artist, Artcyclopedia is a great jumping off place. Using Artcyclopedia, you can type in or select an artist's name, and be taken to a list of Websites providing digital images of that artist's work. For example, selecting Jan Van Eyck yields a list of about fourteen sites. The advantage of using Artcyclopedia is that they have already done some of the searching for you. Instead of guessing which museums might have a digital image of your artist and going to each museum's site to begin searching, Artcyclopedia allows you to search a number of museums at once and go directly to their holdings on your artist. Arthur is a demonstration project currently under development at the Getty Information Institute. This project uses the AMORE image system, developed by NEC USA, Inc., to index and search the pictures and text of nearly 600 selected web sites which have been organized into five databases. Information on the scope and content of these databases is available. Arthur is primarily a visual system that works by finding images that are similar in color and shape to your selected query image. While it is possible to retrieve images by artist's name and other words using Arthur, this is not a reliable search method as words included in a search may be from the text of the associated web page, rather than the subject of the picture. Michael Delahunt, an elementary school art teacher, began ArtLex in 1996 "to contribute to the Web's enrichment with an art site both rich with meaning and dense with links." Currently, ArtLex is a browseable collection of terms and definitions, often accompanied by images, graphics and links to museum sites. For example, the definition of papyrus is accompanied by an image of a fragment of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Clicking on its caption takes you to the Michael Carlos Museum at Emory University, where you can view more ancient Egyptian art if you wish. Our Place in the World, a curriculum unit for elementary and secondary teachers by Dr. Mary Erickson, Professor of Art Education at Arizona State University, is the first in a series of ten curriculum units (Stories of Art) to be made available at the ArtsEdNet (Getty Education Institute for the Arts) site. The unit is driven by an inquiry-based approach to learning, in which "students formulate questions and search for answers in their own experiences and by consulting knowledgeable sources." However, it also incorporates thematic and discipline-based approaches. The unit consists of seven core lessons, as well as several supplementary lessons, including a theme portfolio, imagination story, art making, and art history, among others.
