This new publication from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers an engaging and attractively illustrated overview of "nature in the metropolis." Almost eight million people live in the greater Chicago area, but this region also contains pockets of prairie, oak savannas, wetlands, and other areas that represent some of the last remaining examples of the natural communities that once covered the Midwest. Many of these areas reside in the six-counties of the Chicago Wilderness, home to over 100 rare plant and animal species. The first is a .pdf version of a 1992 print book containing a large selection (over 100) of declassified documents on the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The collection consists of many of the most important CIA documents on this event, including correspondence and meeting notes from the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) John A. McCone, intelligence reports, briefing papers, and materials related to Operation MONGOOSE, a program aimed at destabilizing the Castro regime. The publication begins with helpful lists of persons mentioned and their contemporary titles and acronyms and abbreviations. Note that a number of the documents have been edited for length, "relevance," and security reasons. The Journals Division of University of Chicago Press has recently made two of its scholarly journals available via the web. Astrophysical Journal has been published since 1895 and is one of "the foremost research journals in the world devoted to recent developments, discoveries, and theories in astronomy and astrophysics." At present, the November 1996 issue is available online in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. An Acrobat reader may be obtained at the site ("Features of the Electronic Edition"). Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography has been published since 1927 and "is the most complete and definitive source for references to the current literature related to the growth and development of children."
