Conscious Investing focuses on "optimized" returns rather than "maximized" returns, which are usually accompanied by maximum risk. Here, the investment firm of Chuck Jones & Associates has constructed an annotated table of contents, including estimated browsing time for each area. It outlines a good amount of information on the subject and links to actual resources that help people get started. The articles and resources are organized well and worded plainly. All of them are published by the host company.

Provided by the Media Resource Center, the Conservative News Service aims to give users an alternative to what it calls "a liberal bias in the American news media and a frequent, liberal double-standard in editorial decisions on what constitutes 'news'." It does this via a mix of short digest news articles and longer analytical articles in eight areas, including politics, economics, defense, religion, and culture. The X-Pert/Files/Links section contains links to conservative experts and their institutions in 45 subject areas. In addition, the site includes links to information about several conservative talk shows ("Radio Uplink") and several bulletin boards. CNS was created by MRC Chairman L. Brent Bozell III. [JS]

Its 2,395 items are categorized into four major topics: Consciousness and Qualia; Mental Content; Psychophysical Relations and Psychological Explanation; and Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. On October 13, the Committee on Standards in Public Life released their long awaited report on the regulation of party political funding and expenditure in the UK. Chaired by Lord Neill of Bladen QC, the Committee recommended the most radical changes in British political party spending in over 100 years. The report contains 100 recommendations ranging from the institution of a 20 million pound maximum spending limit on general elections, to the establishment of an independent Election Commission, to implementing tax breaks to encourage ordinary citizens to contribute to parties in order to wean parties from their reliance on large contributors and corporations. The report has immediately received cross-party support, and its main findings may become law by next Autumn. [MD]

http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/
To guide anyone who wants to produce a well-designed web site, the Yale Center for Advanced Instructional Media (C/AIM) provides this style manual, which comfortingly states, "The basic elements of a document aren't complicated, and have almost nothing to do with Internet technology." C/AIM develops multimedia educational and communications programs; the Web Style Guide is an outgrowth of their web development projects. The Guide addresses the problem of creating Web sites that are both easy to use and full of complex content by applying sound design concepts derived from print media traditions. The Guide is broken into chapters on topics such as interface, site, and page design, web graphics, multimedia and animation, and also includes extensive bibliographies and a visual glossary of common interface icons such as buttons and check boxes. DERWeb, provided by the Departments of Information Studies and Restorative Dentistry at the University of Sheffield (UK), is a dentistry meta-site that is highlighted by an image library containing over 1,600 images on "Paedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Preventive Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Radiology and Cross Infection Control." Unfortunately, the images are sorted only by accession number, and no searching is available. However, the collection does offer 2 image sizes of each image, along with a caption. The site also contains a number of teaching materials, the British Dental Association web pages, and pointers to other dental resources. There is also a directory of over 135 dentistry related companies (mostly in the UK). [JS]

"There are more female physicists than people know about!" This claim is made by the producers of this well-documented archive of citation and biographical information about 20th century women physicists, led by UCLA Physics Professor Emeritus, Nina Byers. This archive contains information about more than 50 women in the past century (to 1976) who have made original and important contributions to physics. The archive was compiled by UCLA staff and others "active in fields in which contributions have been made." Details about important contributions, publications, honors, employment history, and references are provided for each woman included in the database. Visitors can search the archive by name or by specific physics fields. A database of the print references used to compile information about the women cited is also available. [AG]
