HTTrack (1998)

http://www.ensicaen.ismra.fr/~roche/httrack.html

HTTrack, developed by Xavier Roche and Vann Philippot of ISMRA-ENSI of Caen, is an easy-to-use Website-mirroring utility. This program consists of a nice user interface combined with a Web robot that, employing parameters specified by the user, retrieves some or all Webpages, graphics, and files from a remote site and downloads them to the user's local hard drive. The downloaded information can then be viewed offline with a normal Web browser. HTTrack provides many features including scheduling the download for a particular time, excluding or including specific URLs based on wildcards, multithreading of download connections for speed, and much more. All versions support both a command-line interface as well as a graphical interface; however, the Unix graphical interface is very primitive. HTTrack v1.2 beta3 is available for Win95/98, and HTTrack v1.16b is available for Solaris 5.6, IBM/A

Hubble Provides Multiple Views of How to Feed a Black Hole--STSCI [QuickTime] (1998)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/1998/14/

The Space Telescope Science Institute has released Hubble Space Telescope images of "a massive black hole hidden at the center of a nearby giant galaxy that is feeding on a smaller galaxy in a spectacular collision." The Hubble's Wide Field Camera, in conjunction with its infrared camera, has penetrated through the dust lane of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A - some 10 million light years from Earth), "to see a twisted disk of hot gas swept up in the black hole's gravitational whirlpool.... The hot gas disk is tilted in a different direction from the black hole's axis -- like a wobbly wheel around an axle. The black hole's axis is identified by the orientation of a high-speed jet of material, glowing in X-rays and radio frequencies, blasted from the black hole at 1/100th the speed of light." The site contains a press release, images in various formats, and four QuickTime animations. [JS]

Hubble Surveys the "Homes" of Quasars (1996)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/96/35.html

The Space Telescope Electronic Information Service has recently released breathtaking Hubble Telescope photos of galaxies that "host" quasars. The quasars seem to "live in a remarkable variety of galaxies, many of which are violently colliding....Hubble researchers are intrigued by the fact that the quasars studied do not appear to have obviously damaged the galaxies in which they live." The photos are of galactic objects 1.4 and 1.5 billion light years from Earth. Photos are in black and white and color, and at various resolutions. The photos are accompanied by an explanatory caption, background material on quasars, and an MPEG model of a quasar. [JS]

Hubble Takes First Image of a Possible Planet Around Another Star and Finds a Runaway World [RealPlayer] (1998)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/1998/19/

The Hubble Space Telescope has returned an image of what is possibly the first planet outside our solar system. TMR-1C, about 450 light years away in the constellation Taurus, appears to have been "flung away from the vicinity of a newly forming pair of binary stars," as evidenced by a luminescent filament leading from the "planet" back to the stars. "Susan Terebey of the Extrasolar Research Corporation in Pasadena, California, and her team using Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS)," made the discovery. Hubble experts estimate the chance of the object being a background star instead of a planet at one to two percent. This Space Science Telescope Institute site contains the press release, captioned images in several formats and resolutions, and a space science update, a one hour RealPlayer press conference with Dr. Terebey and other astronomers. Hubble Witnesses The Final Blaze Of Glory Of Sun-Like Stars--STSCI [QuickTime] (1997)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/97/38.html

The Space Telescope Science Institute has released this stunning photograph from the Hubble Space Telescope, the "supersonic exhaust from [planetary] nebula M2-9." This is an example of a "bipolar planetary nebula" and is estimated to be ten times the diameter of Pluto's orbit. This picture, along with others, contributes to astronomers' understanding of the complex processes that can result from the death throes of Sun-like stars. The site contains the M2-9 photo in several resolutions and formats, an explanatory caption, a photo gallery of other planetary nebulas, a QuickTime movie illustrating the process, and other explanatory material. Hubble's Deepest View Ever (1996)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/96/01.html

The Hubble Telescope's "deepest-ever view of the universe" is available for viewing. "Several hundred never before seen galaxies are visible in this 'deepest-ever' view of the universe, called the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), made with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Besides the classical spiral and elliptical shaped galaxies, there is a bewildering variety of other galaxy shapes and colors that are important clues to understanding the evolution of the universe. Some of the galaxies may have formed less that one billion years after the Big Bang." Photos are available in low and high resolution, black & white and color, and are accompanied with a detailed explanatory caption, press release, and background information.

Hubble's Photos of Pluto (1996)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/96/09.html

The Hubble Space Telescope's photographs of the surface of Pluto are available on the Web. The photographs were taken during a seven day period in late June and early July of 1994, but have just recently become available. To understand the power of the Hubble Telescope, "viewing surface detail on Pluto is as difficult as trying to read the printing on a golf ball located thirty-three miles away!" Along with two resolutions of a surface map of Pluto, there are three resolutions of an entire planet picture, as well as PostScript and Adobe Acrobat PDF illustrations of the planet's orientation during the picture. Explanatory captions are provided. For more information about the Hubble Space Telescope, see the Space Telescope Science Information Service

http://www.undp.org/hdro/report.html

Released on Monday July 12, the tenth edition of the United Nation Development Programme's (UNDP) Human Development Report has garnered considerable attention from the international press all week. The report ranks 174 countries on quality of life indicators such as life expectancy, wealth, and literacy, ranking Canada at the top and Sierra Leone at the bottom. The report pays particular attention to the opportunities and dangers of globalization. Although living conditions in almost all countries have improved over the last ten years, according to the report, economic inequalities have reached "grotesque" proportions, "with the richest fifth of humanity enjoying more than 85% of total gross domestic product and the poorest fifth only 1%." In an effort to track the progress of and provide access to the work of the Human Genome Project (see the October 14, 1998 Scout Report for Science & Engineering ), the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has expanded their Web resource. The Human Genome Resources page provides a wealth of relevant resources, from background information on the project, to specific sequences for each human chromosome (click on the desired chromosome), to Genome Maps of other organisms. Also new is the Human Genome Sequencing page, which allows users to browse the genome by chromosome and download sequences. A searchable tool bar fac

Human Rights Watch World Report 1999 (1998)

http://www.hrw.org/hrw/worldreport99/index.html

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has just released its ninth annual review of human rights around the world in advance of Human Rights Day, December 10, 1998, the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The report covers events and developments in 68 countries from December 1997 through early November 1998. The report is generally well-written, offering excellent overviews of the conditions of human rights on regional and selected national levels. Users in the US may be particularly interested in the detailed critique of American policies on human rights both internationally and within its own borders. The Report also provides information on selected campaigns and thematic concerns, such as arms, and the rights of women and children. [MD]

Human Rights Watch World Report 2000 (1999)

http://www.hrw.org/wr2k/

Human Rights Watch issued their annual world report last week, summarizing the state of human rights in 66 countries around the globe. Written with the clarity and detail that marked previous annual issues, this year's report is distinguished by its note of guarded optimism. The report cites two main trends -- the increased activity of international courts to bring sovereign leaders to justice and the greater willingness of nations to act in concert against a single nation to oppose human rights violations -- as evidence of a partial dismantling of national sovereignty as an impenetrable defense for human rights violators. Separate sections of the report address special topics, such as academic freedom, child soldiers, the international campaign to ban landmines, and lesbian and gay rights. [DC]

Hunter S. Thompson-- The Atlantic Unbound American Graffiti [RealPlayer] (1997)

http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/graffiti/hst.htm

The Atlantic Monthly's Unbound web site contains a special feature devoted to "Gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson. This site contains two parts: Writing on the Wall, a multimedia interview with the journalist conducted by Matthew Hahn; and Sven Birkirts' (author of The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age ) essay entitled Strange Pollen: Dr. Hunter Thompson and the Spirit of the Age. In Writing on the Wall, Thompson addresses such issues as the effect of the Internet on the future of journalism, his status as a "classic" author, the end of Richard Nixon's presidency, and the state of modern US politics, among others. Of course, the interview is much more entertaining when excerpts are experienced in RealAudio or RealVideo, as Thompson in the flesh is so much more than Thompson on the page. Strange Pollen is an interpretive, biographical essay, whose title is insp

Huntington Archive of Buddhist and Related Art (1997)

http://kaladarshan.arts.ohio-state.edu/exhib/ccomic/comdscp.html

Currently on view at the Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library (April 25-June 13, 1997) is an exhibition of "lianhuanhua," or "linked pictures" curated by Julia F. Andrews and Kuiyi Shen. To complement the exhibition, the Huntington Photographic Archive has created an electronic version of the exhibition that includes thirteen of the works on display. The small illustrated stories became known as "lianhuanhua" in the 1920s, and in the subsequent decades they "frequently took their stories from popular dramas, traditional fiction, or contemporary film." The lianhuanhua in the exhibit were produced in Shanghai between 1950 and 1985. Clicking on the image or arrow on the front page will take visitors to the frames-based Lianhunahua Index where thumbnail images display all of the illustrated pages of a work along with a brief description of the story. Each of these secondary images

HVS GIFCruncher--GIF Compression Tool (1998)

http://www.spinwave.com/

HVS GIFCruncher, provided by Digital Frontiers, is an online tool that compresses the file size of GIFs. There are three modes for compression. Basic optimizes a single GIF from the hard drive or web page, Custom provides control options for optimizing a GIF from the hard drive/web page/FTP directory, and Batch (not yet available) optimizes multiple GIFs from a web page or FTP directory/subdirectories. After the GIFs are processed, GIFCruncher provides several new GIF options as well as the original image for comparison. Users can also obtain specific information such as file size, number of colors, dither percent, savings in bytes, and savings in download time on a 28.8 modem. Since the site is currently in beta test, all three modes are free of charge (although you must register to use Custom and Batch). In the future, the Custom and Batch modes will require a fee. [TB]
