The Xerox PARC Map Viewer is aimed at students and the just-plain-curious who wish to expand their knowledge of the world. The Map Viewer allows the user to click on a portion of a map of the world and continue clicking for increasingly magnified views. Each map image is created on demand from a geographic database. The maps, however, are schematic; no country names, or roads, or anything else, except for the longitude and latitude lines and the boundaries of the land masses are included on the map.

That the US government provides a treasure chest of statistical information is a well known fact. That it is provided through a large number of agencies at a dizzying number of sites is also a fact that, until now, made finding the information you needed a daunting task. FedStats, the US government's new one-stop shopping site for statistical information, has made that task much easier. It provides links to government statistics from over seventy government agencies, with purviews from agriculture to transportation. Access is via agency or topic (program), with much agency information also providing direct links to specific statistical series. For example, if you are looking for energy information, FedStats not only provides a link to the Energy Information Administration, but also direct links to twenty-six different energy statistics data sets. This is a key value-added feature, as any

Mapedit is a client-side imagemap editor provided by Boutell.Com, Inc.; it is available for Macintosh, Windows 3.1/95/NT, and Unix. This imagemap editor adds client-side imagemaps into existing HTML documents. The cost of this handy tool is just $25; evaluation copies are available and good for 30 days. Mapedit's latest version supports onMouseOver and onMouseOut JavaScript attributes. The Macintosh version requires Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) version 1.5. Special note: due to a security hole which allowed for illegal access into the operating system by an Applet found in versions 1.5 and earlier, you must download version 1.5.1 of MRJ; the Unix version also requires Java runtime environment (JDK). Although Mapedit proved a bit slow in tests involving saving on the Mac, it remains a valuable, time-saving tool overall. [TB]

Visitors can find a map for just about any place in the entire world at the MapQuest page. This is a large and useful site, and contains everything from very general maps to very narrowly focused street maps. For example, thereâ s an interactive street atlas of North America, and we put MapQuest through its paces by typing in our favorite obscure streets. MapQuest found them all--including a small street on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. TripQuest, which can map out a driving route, and JavaQuest, are nifty features. There are also links to restaurants, cafes, lodging, and more around the globe

With "March Madness" approaching -- high school state and national college basketball tournaments -- attention should be turned to one of the best basketball sites on the 'Net, provided by one of the most basketball crazy states in the U.S. -- Illinois. The Chicago Tribune now offers a Web site called March Madness which chronicles the complete history of boys and girls Illinois state high school basketball tournaments since 1908 (boys) and 1977 (girls). The site contains full text of the original Tribune articles covering every championship game, along with box scores and all-tournament teams. Individual and team records, biographies of "all time" Illinois players and coaches, and a list of "Mr. and Ms. Basketball" in Illinois are available, along with this year's schedule of games. Probably the highlight of the site is a video library of over ten short films (for both PC and Mac) of gr
