Multicultural Cosmology Home Page (1995)

http://arcturus.pomona.claremont.edu/

This page relates myth to astronomy, which makes good sense since many mythic systems are based on trying to recognize and explain the forces that govern the sun, moon, planets, and other forces of nature. They plan to have information available on six different societies of the ancient Americas. For now, you can access data about the Mayans, Aztecs, and Inuits (Eskimos).

Multiple Galaxy Collisions Surprise Hubble Astronomers [QuickTime, .pdf] (1999)

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/1999/45/index.html

Recent surprising discoveries have led Hubble space telescope astronomers to rethink theories on a class of galaxies called ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRG). It was previously believed that only pairs of galaxies were interacting in ULIRGs, but recent photos from Hubble show multiple collisions of four or even five galaxies smashing together. The images, provided at this site, offer a glimpse of what conditions were like in the early universe when galaxy collisions were commonplace. Users can read the official press release and view a number of images in different sizes and formats at the above URL. Additional resources include two QuickTime movies of astronomer Dr. Kirk Borne discussing his new finding and describing one of the images, and links to related discoveries at the Hubble site. [MD]

Municipal Code Corporation (1997)

Drawing heavily on the Folio databases made available by the Municipal Code Corporation, as well as other sources, Jeannette Voiland of the Seattle Public Library has compiled a growing list of over 150 municipal codes in 37 states at this time. Depth of coverage varies by state, with especially good coverage for Florida, California, and Washington. As the site grows, it should become a major repository for US municipal code information. Everything you ever wanted to know about the Muppets can be found on this home page. The muppets are the very popular puppets created by Jim Henson, a professional puppeteer, during the 1950s. But it was not until the late 1960s, when Henson produced the childrenâ s television show, "Sesame Street," that the muppets really took off. During the 1970s the "Muppet Show" became a surprising prime-time hit and was followed by a string of Muppet movies. This site includes everything from a "muppography" and an archive of muppet news to episode guides and information about the performers behind the

This site, provided by Enrique Mallen, Professor of Modern and Classical Languages at Texas A&M University, is a Picasso wellspring. In addition to a briefly annotated chronology of the great painter's life, a chronology of his works, studies of the artist and specific works (in several languages), and an enormous bibliography, there are the Halls. It is in the Halls, arranged chronologically and unadorned by anything but title and year, that the art resides. The Works section offers visitors a little more context pertaining to featured pieces. Though the site could benefit from a little more overall description, the amount of material available is astonishing. [JS]

Museum Trips (1995)

http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/scripts/JASON.html

The JASON Project sponsors an annual scientific expedition focusing on curriculum development for grades 4 through 8. During the expedition, students can take part in live, interactive programs that are broadcast using state-of-the-art technology to a network of educational, research, and cultural institutions in the United States, Mexico, Bermuda, and the United Kingdom. This "electronic field trip" has taken students to look at giant tubeworms at hydrothermal vents in the Sea of Cortés, to the rain forest canopy in Belize, to a lava flow on the island of Hawaii, to the coral reefs off Florida, and other unique environments. Students have observed data collected in real-time, heard a live underwater broadcast from a diver, and questioned scientists working in the field using a special two-way satellite audio system.

Museums and the Web 1999, an international conference to be held March 11-14, 1999 in New Orleans, promises to address many of the issues that museums are facing as they begin to place exhibits and programming on the Web. Those unable to attend the conference can still benefit from the 50+ presentation and demonstration papers now available on the Web. Some describe individual projects, such as "Beethoven Online" from Germany, while others might answer how-to questions for museums just venturing into the digital realm. Examples of paper topics include "The Use of FileMaker for Museum Databases," "Is the Web a Communication Tool or Digital Disneyland for Art Works?" and "Exploiting the Potential of 3D Navigable Virtual Exhibition Spaces." Abstracts are available for those papers that are not available online in full-text. [AG]

Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music, 1870-1885 (1998)

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/smhtml/smhome.html

American Sheet Music, 1870-1885 is an addition to the American Memory Collection of digitized historical materials at the Library of Congress. In 1870, the US Congress passed copyright legislation that required the deposit of one copy of any copyrighted work at the Library of Congress. As a result, thousands of pieces of music were sent to the Library of Congress, and in 1896, the Library established its Music Collection with 400,000 items. The online collection currently includes 22,000 musical compositions that were registered for copyright between 1870 and 1879. Both catalog records and digital images of the sheet music are available, allowing users to search or browse by author, title, or subject, and view the complete musical notation. Descriptions of any illustrations on the sheet music are not included in the catalog records, so pictures can only be located by browsing. The Librar

Music in the Public Domain (1999)

http://www.pdinfo.com/

Founded in 1986, PD Info (taken over in early 1999 by Haven Sound, Inc.) provides information and resources for identifying public domain materials. As part of that project, this site has been developed to help users understand what music they can freely use and how they may use it. As the site explains, the rules for public domain use are not as clear-cut as they seem, and users will find a concise and helpful overview of the differences between copyright and public domain, and how to identify and prove public domain. The heart of the site is a 3,000 song alphabetical list of royalty-free music anyone may use in any way. Additional resources at the site include annotated links to other public domain sites and a brief list of examples of projects using public domain music. [MD]

Music Resources on the Internet (1995)

http://www.music.indiana.edu/misc/music_resources.html

Music Resources on the Internet isn't a flashy Web site; it's just five or six pages of text with links. But with a total of nearly 2,000 links, it's a very good place to start your search for musical information on the Web. Music Resources focuses primarily on Western classical music, but the site has something for almost everyone: fan pages for bands you've never heard of (and for bands you love), record company web sites, scholarly papers, cool instruments from all over the world, discographies of your favorite jazz musicians. If they'd only add a search engine, Music Resources on the Internet would be just about perfect.
