In what is being widely regarded as a ground-breaking article, three noted nuclear weapons analysts have revealed that, during the Cold War, the US stored up to 12,000 nuclear weapons and components in at least 23 countries and 5 American territories including Japan, Cuba, Iceland, and Morocco. Appearing in the November/ December 1999 issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, this article is the fruit of years of detective work and appears to declassify a formerly top secret study, "History of the Custody and Deployment of Nuclear Weapons: July 1945 through September 1977," which was prepared by the Office of the Secretary of Defense in 1978. Users can read the full text of the article, which contains several charts and photographs, in HTML or .pdf format at the Bulletin site. Also included is an appendix which lists nuclear weapons deployment by country, 1951-77. The National Secu

Created by five graduate students at the University of Michigan, this bibliographic site covers approximately 400 Native American authors, 700 books and 200 URLs. Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic formally join NATO today. The entry of these three former Warsaw Pact nations into the US-led alliance and their ongoing negotiations to join the European Union mark a dramatic shift in the political landscape and symbolize the final demise of a divided Europe. However, a number of questions and difficulties remain. Not the least of these is relations with Russia, which has consistently expressed its disapproval of NATO expanding eastward. Should the country come under the control of nationalist political parties, an expanded NATO may actually increase rather than mitigate security concerns and political tensions. Another untested factor is public opinion within the new NATO member countries. The realities of NATO membership -- increased defense spending and the prospect of military operations against fellow Europeans in Yugoslavia -- may quickly e

NATO At Fifty -- Brookings Institution (1999)

http://www.nytimes.com/library/world/global/nato-50-index.html

The heart of the nation's capital has become one big high-security area, as dignitaries from the nineteen NATO countries and other allied nations arrive for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's 50th anniversary Summit in Washington, April 23-25. Originally planned as a festive celebration of NATO's half-century in existence, the summit has been recast in a more somber mood as alliance members discuss the war against Serbia. Although NATO has, up to this point, managed to display a unified face regarding Kosovo and Serbia, that unity may face its toughest challenge yet this weekend, as British Prime Minister Tony Blair and some members of Congress press their case for the deployment of ground troops. At the New York Times site (free registration required), users will find a selection of articles, documents, and forums; a chronology; and related links which collectively offer an excell

The NRC Web site is straightforward in its design: no fancy graphics, just a three-tiered table of contents full of links to Internet resources related to the environment and to Canada's natural resources. Topics include the Canadian Forest Service, the Corporate Services Sector, the Energy Sector, the Geological Survey of Canada, the Mineral and Energy Technology Sector, and the Mining Sector. "Wired for Conservation" is the Nature Conservancy's home on the Web. The Nature Conservancy manages more than 1,500 nature preserves and protects more than nine million acres of wildlife habitat, "the largest private system of wildlife refuges in the world." Nature Chat connects to birding, fishing, hiking, and photography Usenet news groups. In the Field describes upcoming Nature Conservancy field trips, contains a species spotlight, and connects to state, regional, and international Nature Conservancy programs. Conservation Science promises to be a valuable resource containing technical data from the Conservancy's biological and conservation databases, but is still under construc

The site can be somewhat confusing and difficult to navigate, but it contains a wealth of information for archaelogists and perhaps ancient historians and classicists. The database is searchable by several options (wreck information, ship contents, literature, exact dating, component images, and search & plot) or browseable by ship number or country. Additional resources at the site include image and distribution maps (robust system strongly recommended), two thematic reviews (Fleets and Frontiers, Maritime Commerce), overviews of ten European maritime museums, and related links. A help section and guided tour are available. [MD]

Recently released by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Interagency Working Group (IWG), this interim report reveals the status of the Group's progress in the long and complex process of identifying, declassifying, and releasing US Government records relating to Nazi war crimes. Among other things, the report reveals that the IWG has identified more than 600 million pages in 127 file categories to be further searched for responsive documents, especially those held by the CIA, FBI, Department of Defense, and the NARA. NBA's Greatest Moments (1996)

http://www.nba.com/nbaat50/greats/

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Basketball Association, the official NBA site has created these two marvelously entertaining sections. The 50 Greatest Players were chosen by a panel of experts (listed at the site). Each player entry contains a profile and a short movie showing his skills. Active players' profiles contain up-to-date career statistics. NBA's Greatest Moments is currently under development, but it contains, at present, a fascinating multimedia article on the wild ending of the 1964-65 Eastern Division championship series between Boston and Philadelphia. The highlight of the story, of course, is radio announcer Johnny Most's gravelly call of one of the most famous steals in NBA history, to the everlasting joy/chagrin of Celtic lovers/haters. This play propelled Boston to its 7th in a series of 8 consecutive championships, a feat unparalleled in America
