The METRO Gopher is a UNIX-based gopher server designed to provide information about The New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency (METRO) to METRO member libraries and other interested parties. METRO promotes resource sharing among its 250 member libraries and library systems, and provides services such as Internet access, continuing education programs, and consulting services. The METRO Gopher was developed to provide METRO information to member libraries who either have direct access to the Internet through their own institutions, or who have Internet access through METRO's METgate system. It may also be used as a guide to other New York State 3R's councils online services or as a general guide to electronic resources located in the New York City Metropolitan area.
The New York University Center for Digital Multimedia announces the launch of the "New York Multimedia Resource Index", an on-line database of companies, organizations and freelancers in The New York State area. NYU invites companies, organizations and freelancers to freely register with this service. In addition, interested parties will be able to contact you more easily. This new free service from the Times is aimed at students grades 6-12, their teachers, and parents. Updated daily Monday through Friday, the site naturally enough offers learning and teaching resources related to current events and journalism. Students can read the day's top stories aided by Knowledge Tools, which hyperlinks selected words and place names to dictionary and encyclopedia definitions. For a more interactive experience, the site offers a news quiz and a chance to communicate with the paper's staff. Teachers will find daily lesson plans, written in partnership with the Bank Street College of Education in New York City, which reference a selected article in the Times . Presented by Journal E, Looking for the Light is a collection of five photo essays by photographer Scott Thode, documenting his observations and interactions with people living with HIV and AIDS. Spanning a fifteen-year period, the stories "reflect the changing attitudes, fears and knowledge about the AIDS crisis." Stories include The Spirit Within, which looks at how people with AIDS deal with the disease on a spiritual level, and Ray of Hope, the story of a father and son both of whom are infected with the virus. The New York Times On the Web has recently added a new section, Business Connections, to its highly selective collection of Web links. The new section provides one-stop shopping for the most authoritative business-related network resources available.
