General Pervez Musharraf assumed the position of chief executive of Pakistan early this morning, completing a very quick and bloodless coup that began on Tuesday night. General Musharraf declared a state of emergency, suspending the constitution and the national and provincial assemblies, dismissing the provincial governments and governors, and banning the Supreme Court from challenging his authority. Reaction to the coup has been rather muted within Pakistan and abroad. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is now in custody, was increasingly unpopular in Pakistan because of the country's dire economic situation, his handling of the conflict with India in Kashmir, and what some saw as his systematic efforts to undermine the authority of rival political parties and branches of government. Foreign officials and editorials have criticized the military and called for the restoration of civilian

PAKT - Program on Applied Coordination Technology (1995)
Originally discovered in a remote corner of Oklahoma in 1994, the fossil of what may have been the largest creature to ever walk the earth has been excavated by a research team from the University of Oklahoma. Dubbed Sauroposeidon proteles, or "thunder lizard," the dinosaur was almost 100 feet long, with a 39 foot neck and weighing over 50 tons, so big that it would have created minor seismic activity just by walking, according to scientists. The new find is about 110 million years old and consists of neck vertebrae, some almost five feet in length, together with neck ribs nearly twelve feet long. The find is also significant because it may shed light on the last of the North American sauropods, who died out about 100 million years ago. A paper on this new find is scheduled to appear in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. The first site, from the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, f

Palinurus: The Academy and the Corporation [frames] (1998)
This pilot site, maintained by Professor Alan Liu of the University of California-Santa Barbara, author of the Voice of the Shuttle site (described in the Scout Report for May 30, 1997 ), was created by humanities scholars to examine the practical and intellectual challenges faced by higher education in a post-industrial world. In today's "information society," "knowledge work" in the business and academic worlds have begun to merge. As any tenured or aspiring academic will tell you, pressures on university departments to downsize and restructure have never been greater, and academia now ignores the lessons and laws of the business world at its own peril. This site reflects on these issues through a hypertext linked bibliography of Suggested Readings, Featured Controversies (Grade Inflation, Faculty Against IT, and others), and in the future, plans to link resources and courses "relevant

The Paradigm Online Writing Assistant, a frames-based site provided by Professor Chuck Guilford of Boise State University, aids writers in a different way from well known Online Writing Labs (OWLs), such as Purdue University's (discussed in the March 8, 1996 Scout Report ), in that it concentrates on helping students think about how to conceive a writing project instead of giving nuts and bolts aids on grammar and style. This site contains sections on discovering what to write, organizing, revising and editing your writing, various types of essays, including thesis/support, argumentative, exploratory, and informal, and documenting sources. Each section is accompanied by activities, which help the student to incorporate the concepts. Professor Guilford understands that good writing is well prepared and thought out before a word hits the page, and that is the power of this site.
