Scholars' Information Requirements in a Digital Age--AHDS (1998)

http://ahds.ac.uk/public/uneeds/un0.html

Daniel Greenstein and Sarah Porter of the Arts and Humanities Data Service, a program funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), UK, have authored a study that focuses on strategies to encourage "greater scholarly exploitation of information technologies and digital resources within the arts and humanities." Research for this consultation draft consisted of a literature review and a series of six workshops. The study provides perspectives on information requirements in the digital age from information professionals and scholars in five different disciplines (based on workshop findings). The draft further explores obstacles to scholarly use of digital resources and suggests strategies for overcoming them. [MD]

It is, according to the authors, important that students in need of financial aid receive assistance, but not in lieu of scholarships to acknowledge outstanding performance in academics and the arts. Included at this site is an online guide for applying for a scholarship through the Internet. An innovative feature at this site is the opportunity for people to find out how they can underwrite scholarships or design awards.

School Tales in 19th Century Fiction (1999)

http://www.schooltales.com/

Creator David Safier, prompted by an interest in educational history and almost 30 years of experience as a high school English teacher, has combined his love of literature with his belief "that good literature can also be good history." This collection of school tales includes passages drawn from nineteenth-century fiction about "common schools" (rather than costly private institutions). With one exception, all are works by US authors, including Mark Twain, Caroline Kirkland, and Edward Eggleston. Currently, there are tales from six writers with more in the works. Common themes are highlighted in the texts, including stories about the schoolmaster, punishment and revenge, students at work, and schoolmates. Introductions and commentaries (in the form of footnotes) are provided for each text. The numbered footnotes, when clicked, appear in a separate frame at the bottom of the page. The n

http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/twf.html

This site, provided by Professor John Baez of the University of California-Riverside, provides overviews and reviews of papers that he "finds enjoyable, especially ones that have not yet been published." It is a no-nonsense site that discusses and evaluates new literature in esoteric fields of physics. As such, it is not for the lay person, but it does present almost unbelievably complex concepts in a disarmingly friendly style. One of the unique features of the site is that the weekly issues are extensively cross-referenced. Topics discussed have included Lie groups, adjoint functors, general relativity, and higher dimensional algebra, among others. Note that "this week" refers to when Professor Baez finds the literature, not necessarily when it first appears. Note that This Week's Finds are also posted to three Usenet newsgroups, where discussion about them can occur.
