Sociable Web (1995)
http://judith.www.media.mit.edu/SocialWeb/
The Social Web allows users to see who else is looking at a specific Web page and to communicate with them in words, pictures, sounds, and links to other places. It allows people to travel the Web together and converse about what they find. The Social Web project consists of a modified Web browser and server. The browser looks like an ordinary browser, and on pages not serviced by a Sociable Web server, it functions normally. On Sociable Web pages, however, it provides a number of new features, most notably information on others who are looking at the pages and the ability to start a conversation with any of these people or join an existing conversation. Still in development, this browser/server combination is already functional on many sites.

Social Progress Web Gallery -- CMC (1999)
http://www.civilization.ca/membrs/canhist/progrese.html
The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) (originally reviewed in the April 21, 1998 Scout Report for Social Sciences ) has recently unveiled a new section that will chronicle social progress in Canada. The first two exhibits, available in both English and French, document the history of the Canadian labor movement and the evolution of Canada's electoral system. The former traces the development of organized labor in Canada from the craft movement through the creation of craft unions to postwar organizing and the challenges of organized labor in the 1980s and 1990s. Each of the six sections offers a selection of short histories and Voices, a collection of photos, texts, and audio pieces (.wav) that showcase the views of people on both sides of the struggle. The content of the second feature, on the History of the Vote, is rather disappointing, more of an advertisement for a related book

Society for Underwater Exploration: Secrets of the Seas [JavaScript, RealPlayer] (1998)
http://www.underwaterdiscovery.org/
The Society for Underwater Exploration is a newly founded organization that sponsors the investigation and excavation of subaqueous archaeological sites worldwide. The society has recently launched a stunning Website that provides information about the society and chronicles the expeditions of Franck Goddio and his team of archaeologists. Currently, the site features the exploration and discoveries of the underwater ruins of the ancient city of Alexandria, submerged 1600 years ago by earthquake-induced tidal waves. The current expedition has uncovered the Palace of Cleopatra and many valuable artifacts, and has also led to the discovery of shipwrecks near Aboukir, Egypt. The sunken French ships, part of Napoleon Bonaparte's fleet, were destroyed in 1798 by Admiral Nelson's British fleet, during the battle of the Nile. The society has just begun excavating the wrecks, and will document th

Thousands of items are available, and though there is a fee to obtain each one, the listings themselves make up a virtual library catalog of automotive engineering. The site also offers a large calendar of SAE events including meetings and expositions, collegiate design competitions, and professional development seminars, among others. The SAE site also offers Engineer Al, a weekly feature on the world of mobility. Text only: text.htm

SocioSite--Going Dutch Sociology (1996)
http://www.pscw.uva.nl/sociosite/
This site, provided by Albert Benschop of the Sociological Institute of the University of Amsterdam, is a large meta-site that is international in scope and European in flavor, although there are also pointers to non-European sites. Its main page contains annotated pointers to sites in 24 main topic areas from data archives to subject areas (106 at this time, from activism to work). Sites are accompanied by brief annotations, and when geographic breakouts are available, they often contain the Dutch, then European, then non-European sites. Unfortunately there is no search utility, which would help users navigate the hundreds of pointers. And in some cases, even in a field this broad, pointers wander to the boundaries of the subject matter (and sometimes beyond). That said, this is still an excellent place to start for sociological resources, especially European ones. [JS]
