The well known Internet Public Library has recently added this site to its Exhibit Hall. The Graystone Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan was "a luxurious '20s temple to nightlife and that new music sweeping America -- jazz." The Graystone was demolished in 1980, but this site helps bring it, and the Detroit jazz scene, alive. The site contains the Detroit Jazz reading room, with five essays about the history of both Detroit jazz and the Graystone; four slide shows depicting the Detroit jazz scene from the 1920s to 1990s; selected RealPlayer cuts from six present day Detroit jazz artists; selected QuickTime videos of "drummist" Roy Brooks (accessible from About Swinging Through Time); a hyperlinked index to the names of bands and artists discussed or highlighted in various parts of the site; and information about the Graystone Museum in Detroit. The Swiss Bankers Association provides this site, listing "all currently known dormant [bank] accounts" that were opened prior to the end of World War II by non-Swiss Citizens. The list can be browsed alphabetically, and contains only name and available information on last reported town and country. Also included is a listing of those given power of attorney by the account holders, as well as information on the individuals who gave power of attorney. This site provides information on how to file a claim, a claim form, and a list of contact offices for Ernst & Young, creators of this site. This list is an attempt by the SBA to "find the rightful owners of dormant accounts that were opened in Swiss banks prior to and during World War II." It is important in light of the recent news about the whereabouts of Holocaust victims' assets ( discussed in the May 16, 1997 Scout Report ). [JS]

Swiss Diplomatic Documents, a site maintained by the Swiss Federal Archives, provides public access to documents on Swiss foreign policy and international relations. This site contains two valuable information resources: the DoDiS database and a comprehensive bibliography. The DoDiS (Diplomatische Dokumente der Schweiz, or Documents Diplomatiques Suisses) database currently includes entries on over 2,000 foreign policy documents, 6,000 persons, 7,000 organizations, and 1,650 geographical terms. The database also contains international agreements, federal laws, and decisions of the Federal Council and of the Federal Assembly. DoDiS is searchable and provides detailed bibliographic data for each entry. Recently about one-fourth of the documents have also been made available in a full-text format (.pdf). The other significant resource at this site is a bibliography on Swiss international re

Volume 3, number 1 of the electronic arts journal of the CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research & Education) Institute of the School of Art and Design at San Jose State University is now online, and focuses on "art of the world wide web." Articles include "Useless Web Pages: Conceptual Folk Art or Post Modern Web Dada?" and "The Construction of Art on the Internet and the Mediating Influence of the Search Engine." The essays are peppered with hypertext links, which may lead the reader to appendices or other websites or even personal homepages with relevance to the topic at hand. Previous issues of Switch have covered such topics as interactive narrative, virtual reality, and artificial life; as befits an arts journal, each issue has its own look and feel (though this can make navigation challenging). The next issue, due in July, will cover web-specific art. [ML]
Switchboard, provided by Banyan Systems, Inc., allows users to search its U.S. database of over 90 million names for telephone numbers and addresses. Listings are compiled from white pages directories throughout the U.S., although because white pages directories are usually updated annually, there is a possibility that the listing you get might be out of date. Switchboard is searchable by name, city and state. Retrieval looks exactly like a telephone listing. A help file is available on the home page. You may also register at the site and personalize your listing, adding an e-mail address if you wish. 10 million U.S. businesses are also searchable.

Periodically a series of "important messages" about new email viruses make their way through various mailing lists. While savvy Internet users can usually immediately spot these hoaxes, they can be both intimidating and frightening to neophytes (not to mention the bandwidth wasted when the messages are passed on to other users.) Two of the better sites that track both email and other computer virus hoaxes are the U.S. Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability's Internet Virus Hoaxes page, and Symantec Corporation's (producer of Norton Utilities) Virus Hoaxes. Between them, they describe fourteen hoaxes, from Good Times, to PENPAL GREETINGS, to Join the Crew. Background, including the actual "warning" message is provided.
