Wild Ones Handbook: A Voice for the Natural Landscaping Movement (1998)

http://www.epa.gov/glnpo/greenacres/wildones/

If you've decided this is the year to try something in the yard other than lawn, the Wild Ones Handbook is a good place to start. Wild Ones is a non-profit group that began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1977 It promotes and supports the use of natural landscaping as an alternative to lawns. The Handbook contains short essays written by natural landscaping designers and enthusiasts, as well as professional prairie nursery representatives. Topics covered include background information on prairies, how not to aggravate neighbors and village officials, preparing a yard for planting and landscaping for wildlife. Several of the essays provide lists of suggested plants native to the Midwest. The online version of the Wild Ones Handbook is a cooperative effort of Wild Ones - Natural Landscapers, Ltd., and the US Envrionmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes National Program (GLNP). [AG]

At present over 35 topics are available, from air pollution to wetlands. In addition, there are connections to sites of current interest. Although the site lacks a search engine and is available only as a single page (nearly 200K) at this time, the number of sites and the usefulness of the index make this a very good place to start for those interested in the oceanic and atmospheric sciences. The Window on Vietnam Web site is basically an advertisement from the Vietnam Trading Corporation, aimed at encouraging international companies to join forces with Vietnamese companies or to invest in Vietnam. The site is unusual in that it is set up as a slide show type of presentation, without any index or table of contents, thus forcing Internet users to view all of the information, in a pre-determined order, without the ability to skip ahead or back. There is, however, a fair amount of useful information on the site, including how to establish a business presence in the country and how to legally conduct business there. You'll also see some pictures, the occasional statistic, and information and links for the Vietnam Trading Corporation, Ltd.

WindowBlinds 0.40 (1999)

http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/

If you have too much time on your hands and you yearn to change the way Microsoft Windows appears on your computer, WindowBlinds, created by StarDock Systems, Inc., is for you. This interesting and entertaining application actually changes the way your Windows 95/98/NT desktop appears -- window borders, backgrounds, buttons, and more can all be altered to your liking. WindowBlinds comes with several already created desktop styles (called "skins") and many more independently created skins are available for download. One of the more amusing skins is the MacPC which makes your Microsoft desktop look like a MacOS system. StarDock also provides the ThemeBuilder utility which, though complex, aids in creating new skins. WindowBlinds is free and runs on Win95/98/NT. [CL]
