The 1994 Hot List: thirty websites, reviewed and pressed to plastic
NautilusCD was a magazine that came on a CD-ROM instead of paper, posted to
subscribers every month through the early 1990s. Buried in the August 1994 disc, in a folder
called \COMPWARE\INTERNET, is a file named AUGWIN.HTM — an
HTML document written when almost nobody had seen one.
It is a Hot List: the staff's favourite places on the Internet that month, each with a review they wrote themselves. The September, October and November discs carry the next instalments. Together they are thirty dated web reviews from a moment when the entire World Wide Web was a few thousand servers — and unlike a book, a monthly magazine tells you the month.
The list opens with an apology for the speed of things, and closes with advice that dates it more precisely than any timestamp:
A companion file, STARTING.DOC, explains what the web actually is for readers who
had not met it: “One of the easiest ways to access the Internet is through graphic front ends
like Mosaic… These hypertext documents look like ASCII text files until your Mosaic front end
translates them.”
August 1994 — Volume 4-8

June 1994: no Hot List, two directories instead
The June disc (Volume 4-6) is the one the August issue points back to — “You'll find more information about the Internet in NautilusCD volume 4-6”. It runs no Hot List. It is the Internet feature issue, and it ships two directories that are arguably worth more than the picks:
- The Free-Nets — free public-access community systems, each with a city, a modem number, an Internet host and a visitor login. Cleveland, Buffalo, Denver, Victoria, Wellington, Erlangen. 19 of them named a real host and are now in the directory as telnet resources.
- PDIAL — Peter Kaminski's Public Dialup Internet Access List, 82 KB, the standard 1994 answer to “how do I get online”. 88 providers are inventoried with their services, fees and coverage; 40 of them published an FTP address for more information, and those are now entries.
A dial-up telephone number is not a network address, so no entry was minted from one — the same line drawn against the access-provider section of Braun's directory. Only the addresses these documents name outright were taken.
The Free-Nets — 19 with a working host

What the five discs were worth
Most of the Hot List picks were already in our directory, so as a source of new addresses these discs are modest. That is not what they are for. A dated monthly gives you evidence about when, and June gives you a part of the 1994 internet that nothing else here covers:
| Hot List picks across four issues | 30 |
| Already held, now with a second, precisely dated witness | 28 |
| Held entries that had no description at all, now filled from 1994 copy | 7 |
| Held entries dated 1995 that these discs prove live in 1994 | 13 |
| Free-Nets recovered from the June issue | 19 |
| PDIAL provider archives recovered | 40 |
| New to the collection in total | 61 |
Method. Both discs are Alcohol .mdf raw images rather than plain
ISO files: 2448 bytes per sector (2352 raw + 96 bytes of subchannel data) with a 16-byte header,
so every logical sector has to be lifted out before ISO 9660 can be parsed at all. The geometry
was confirmed against the volume descriptor's own position — CD001 sits at byte
39185, and (39185 − 1 − 16) ÷ 2448 = 16 exactly, which is where a Primary Volume
Descriptor belongs.
