Designed as a resource to biocatalytic reactions and related data, this site links to available pathways, revealing the starting compound, a pathway map, and reactions. The starting compound is located on a separate page, with links to EXTOXNET (extension toxicology network) and Material Safety Data Sheets for the compound. Compiled in text-only format, the pathway map for a compound includes links to all of the compounds or reactions, which in turn have similar links to separate pages.

The intent of this biology image resource (free, registration required), provided by the University of Ottawa (Canada) is to aid French language biology teachers, but its over 2,700 images are a veritable gold mine to biology teachers in any language. Images can be searched or browsed (under Resources) in three major categories: zoology, botany, and histology. Images may be diagrams (black and white or color), photos, or annotated diagrams. The annotated images are provided in CorelDraw or Microsoft PowerPoint format and may be .zip compressed. Most images are briefly described, and thumbnails are linked to much larger images. The site is available in both French and English. Note that the botany section is quite rudimentary at this time. [JS]

Peter J. Bryant, Professor of Developmental and Cell Biology at the University of California, Irvine, provides this hypertext book as a learning aid for his Biological Conservation class. It is an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the topic. Divided into sixteen understandable chapters, it covers such topics as the history of life, depletion and extinction from over-exploitation, exotic introductions, and deforestation, among others. The content is supported by illustrations, photos, charts, and a webliography for each chapter (a work in progress which is also available in full at the end of the book). However, the features that add the greatest value to the site are the well thought out hyperlinks to other relevant resources. There are literally hundreds of these; they combine with the original content of the site to form a powerful resource for undergraduate students. [JS]

This site, created under the direction of mathematics professor Larry Riddle, is part of "an on-going project by students in mathematics classes at Agnes Scott College ... to illustrate the numerous achievements of women in the field of mathematics." There are currently over 130 biographical essays available, from Maria Gaetana Agnesi to Lai-Sang Young, many of which contain photos and references for both print and electronic sources. The essays are accessible by browsing either the alphabetical or chronological index. Two other sections of interest list the first Ph.D.'s in mathematics obtained by women before 1930 and a list of prizes, awards, and honors granted to women mathematicians. [AG]

The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (discussed in the October 15, 1997 Scout Report for Science & Engineering ), part of the Biological Resources Division of the US Geological Survey, provides 315 bird checklists for 48 states, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. These checklists are designed to help birdwatchers decide where to look for specific birds. They are compiled from various national wildlife refuges, national parks, and state bird checklists. With slight variations in format, these checklists usually contain seasonal information about the abundance of various species in a reported area. The simple designs allow for ease of printing. Note that checklist dates of publication range from 1982-1997. One of the main purposes of the site is to encourage the updating and maintenance of the resources here. [JS]

Released on April 29, this new Department of Health and Human Services report reveals that the US birth rate has dropped to a record low, due in part to a continuing decline in the teen birth rate. The birth rate for fifteen to nineteen year-olds has declined for six straight years, falling sixteen percent between 1991 and 1997. The report, presented in .pdf format, offers a comprehensive look at birth and fertility patterns based on the latest data for the nation and each state. In addition, it addresses topics such as maternal lifestyle, medical services utilization, and infant health. References and technical notes are also provided. [MD]
