Bodleian Library / Toyota City Imaging Project--Oxford University (1997)

http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/toyota/

The Bodleian Library of Oxford University has released its first digital imaging project on the web. The John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera, one of the largest and most important collections of printed ephemera anywhere in the world, was the source of the thousands of motoring and transportation images now accessible at this site. This image database can be searched by keyword or by browsing through images categorized by type of transport (motor cars, carriages and coaches, bicycles, ships, and railways, among others). Images range from single page advertising leaflets for 19th century bicycles to complete early 20th century motoring manuals. There are three screen display formats: text only, thumbnail images with brief descriptions, and full-screen images. [AG]

Provided by the Biota of North America Program (BONAP) in collaboration with the Texas A&M Bioinformatics Working Group (TAMU-BWG), The BONAP Synonymized Checklist is more than a typical checklist. It is a database, offering multiple layers of vascular flora information at several different taxonomic levels. Understanding the organization of the site is central to its utility; to enter the database, users may select options to browse by family name, query by genera or common name, query text (for text strings), or follow links to the Flowering Plant Family Finder (Cronquist classification system; also accessible through The Flowering Plant Gateway, reviewed in the September 25, 1998 Scout Report ). Once inside the database, users can drill down to distribution maps of the selected family, genus, or species. In many cases, species images accompany distribution maps through links to the Va

Bonus.com, provided by Apaloosa Interactive Corporation, is innovative in both content and style. Part activities meta-site, part virtual toybox, it allows children to find hundreds of fun, interactive online things to do, including "games, coloring books, puzzles, and photo galleries," in sections entitled Play, Color, Explore, Dissect, and Imagine. More innovative, however, is the "NetScooter" technology employed to create a Bonus browser and hide the regular browser behind it. In this way, a "fence" is built around the Bonus site, which, while allowing navigation within the site, keeps your child out of the Internet at large. While this will not foil older, more Internet-savvy children, it is a wonderful way to protect younger children from stumbling onto some of the more unsavory Internet sites--although they'll probably be having so much fun with this site that you'll have to tear t

Book of Hours (1999)

http://vrlab.fa.pitt.edu/UPitthoursms/index.html

Provided by the Frick Fine Arts Library at the University of Pittsburgh, this modest but appealing site showcases a fifteenth-century Book of Hours held by the Library. Books of Hours were produced throughout Europe in the Middle Ages for use by the laity in their daily devotions. Modeled after the Breviary used by the clergy, Books of Hours were often lavishly decorated with miniatures, elaborate embellishments, and red or gold ink. Interesting as both an insight into medieval religion and as a work of art in itself, the Frick Book of Hours is presented by section, with either thumbnail or full-page images and brief descriptions. A short bibliography on Books of Hours and illuminated manuscripts is also provided. [MD]

Book: The Mayan Prophecies (1996)

http://www.knowledge.co.uk/xxx/cat/mayan/

The authors demonstrate how the Mayan Holy Number 1,366,560 days, known as the birth of Venus and the basis of their calendar, indicates ancient knowledge of sun spot cycles and their effect on the human race. They explore the popular myth of Quetzalcoatl and its origins in Maya ideas concerning the sun cycle. They show the links between the pre-Columbian civilizations of Central America and the Old World, in particular Egypt. Examining the archaeological record, they find further evidence for linking the origins of Mayan civilization with the mythical lost continent of Atlantis, which according to Plato was destroyed in a series of catastrophes. They reveal that the Mayan calendar…

When the Earth Nearly Died: Compelling Evidence of A Catastrophic World Change 9,500 BC. (c) 1995 by By D S Allan and J B Delair. When the Earth Nearly Died carefully documents the fascinating story - which has never been told before in such detail - of how the so-called Golden Age of peaceful conditions and equable climates ended traumatically in a tremendous catastrophe about 11,500 years ago. This was part of a cataclysm which affected the whole solar system, destroyed at least one sizable planet and its satellite, and also severely devastated Mars and Earth. Part One: A Lost Beginning: 1. The age of the Earth, 2. Debris of a Broken World, 3. Enigmas in Stone, 4. World Ages - World Suns…

Books on the Social Aspects of Computing, 1996-1997 (1998)

http://dlis.gseis.ucla.edu/people/pagre/recent-books.html

Philip E. Agre, Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego, and moderator of the Red Rock Eater (RRE) News Service (discussed in the November 15, 1996 Scout Report ), maintains a giant bibliography of recent books on the "social, cultural, political, economic, business, literary, legal, and religious aspects of networking and computing." The bibliography has recently been updated to cover English language books published in 1996-97. It is a spare, un-annotated bibliography, but its power lies in the quality and number (over 300 at present) of books it covers. Note that the bibliography is not meant to be comprehensive, does not cover "technical books or directories," and is admittedly biased towards the maintainer's interests. [JS]

The theme of this first issue is "New Voices"; themes for the coming months' issues include vice, life and death, travel, and memoir. Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace (1996)

http://www.nytimes.com/bosnia/

The Dayton accords, signed in Paris on December 20, 1995 by the leaders of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, marked the end of open hostilities in Bosnia. But the tragic saga of this conflict continues, as the people of the former Yugoslavia try to rebuild their shattered region. The New York Times presents an interactive photo essay by the French photojournalist Gilles Peress, which documents the last weeks of the siege of Sarajevo in February and March. The site is arranged geographically, allowing the viewer to tour Sarajevo itself and three of its suburbs, including Grbavica, the last to be turned over to Bosian rule. Peress' audio narration describes the scenes he documents, making this virtual photo gallery truly multimedia. Visitors to the site can participate in month-long forums on a wide range of issues, each hosted by an individual with experience in the Bosnian conflict. The Times
