CERES: California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (1995)

http://agency.resource.ca.gov/

CERES, an information system available via the Web, is a resource that will be of particular interest to California residents. According to the site's maintainers, "CERES is named for the Roman goddess of agriculture, whose symbol--the poppy--is the California State Flower." The Web site was created to provide students, professors, government agencies, environmental activists, and citizens with information about California's physical environment, living creatures, and habitats. Featured links include the California Coastal Commission, the Department of Fish and Game, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Conservation Corps, California Rivers Assessment, and the California Energy Commission. If you spend any time at this site, you're likely to come across not only documents, but also photos, satellite images, and statistical databases. A noteworthy collection of searching tools is provided as well, so that you can quickly recover information on specific topics of interest. You can search by organization, geographic area, theme, or keyword.

Cerf's Up [PowerPoint, ShockWave] (1997)

http://www.wcom.com/about_the_company/cerfs_up/

This site, part of MCI's technology pages, allows users to share in the wealth of Internet information and insight provided by Vinton Cerf, who, in addition to being an MCI executive, is also widely known as one of the fathers of the Internet--he is a co-inventor of the TCP/IP protocol that makes it work. Cerf's Up features over 30 PowerPoint slide presentations on various topics, and a powerful, though somewhat dated, online 36-slide ShockWave audio visual slide presentation. Users can refer to the Cerf Report for topical publications, or read interviews at the Cerf's Up Q&A section; this site cannot compare to witnessing a live Cerf presentation but it does offer the next best thing. CERN httpd v3.0 patch for User Defined Error Messages (1996)

http://lara0.exp.edf.fr/glazman/daniel.html

Announcing an unofficial patch for the CERN v3.0 httpd server. . This package contains a little and very simple patch (contextual diff) to be applied to the code of CERN HTTPD v3.0 if you want it to answer user defined error documents instead of the insipid common CERN HTTPD error messages. . The httpd daemon, in case of error, then tries to serve the contents of a html document located in a configuration-defined directory. If no document is available, the CERN httpd error message is then used. . Available at : . http://lara0.exp.edf.fr/glazman/daniel.html . /* Enjoy ! */

Cetus Links--Object Orientation (1997)

http://www.rhein-neckar.de/~cetus/

Cetus Links, originally provided by programmer Manfred Schneider, and now maintained by a team of seven programmers, contains over 5,500 links to web sites, newsgroups, and mailing lists dealing with object orientation. It is divided into sections on distributed objects, OOA&D methods and tools, languages (over 20 at present, from Ada to Visual C++), databases, and advanced topics (patterns, libraries, frameworks, reuse, testing, and numerics). While the individual links usually provide no more than author information, each section is divided by both access protocol and theme. These divisions are quite rudimentary (for example, most sections are divided by such subsection headings as: introductory, further info, general, books, conferences, resources, etc.). Needless to say, this is not a resource for the casual user. The lack of a search engine (unless the user wants to download a 975 K

CGI browser is a flexible and highly customizable presentations browser. It's based on the presentation of a series of slides which may be created with a presentations program, or photographs or schemes or any other kind of image. It' programmed in sh (UNIX). To access the slides, the program has two different interfaces: Text mode: where you can read a brief description of each slide. Graphic mode: where you can see a catalog of the photos in low resolution in order to reduce access times. From here you can access the desired slide by only clicking on its reduced image in the catalog. To change from one interface to the other you must simly click on an icon. Once a slide is accessed…

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) is the standard for interfacing external applications with Internet and Web servers. This site answers common questions about how to learn CGI, the effect of different Web browsers, object headers, and environment variables. Language-specific questions about C, Perl, Python, and TCL are presented. Although the site is helpful, its lack of comprehensiveness earns it the lower ratings.

The purpose of cgiemail, a CGI program written in C for Unix, is to take the input of WWW forms and convert it to an e-mail format defined by the author of the WWW form, so that the resulting e-mail messages are not difficult to sort through. It requires slightly more work than other forms-to-email programs. The cgiemail home page is http://web.mit.edu/wwwdev/cgiemail/. What's new in release 1.2? This release eases debugging of various problems with sendmail. * A new hidden variable, cgiemail-mailopt, is introduced. It's only option so far is to allow synchronous mail delivery, to ease debugging when no mail gets through and the user doesn't have access to the bounce message. * NetBSD users…

Chaffing and Winnowing: Confidentiality without Encryption (1998)

http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~rivest/chaffing.txt

This paper, provided by Ronald L. Rivest, professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, proposes a new method of computer message security. The method is called "chaffing and winnowing." Messages are broken up into packets and each packet is appended with a "message authentication code" (MAC). Then "chaff," fake packets with fake MACs, is intermingled with the true packets. The receiver of the message uses a secret code (shared with the sender) to "winnow" the chaff in order to receive the true message. Since this process does not involve encryption, it is proposed that it will circumvent "attempts by law enforcement to regulate confidentiality by regulating encryption." [JS]

The American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom is gearing up for the 17th annual Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, September 26-October 3, 1998. The event is sponsored by numerous organizations and is endorsed by the Library of Congress's Center for the Book. This annual event "draws attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society and allows an opportunity to celebrate our First Amendment freedoms by acknowledging how fragile they are." To coincide with the event, ALA publishes a Resource Guide each year for librarians and teachers which contains posters, bookmarks, and suggestions for activities and events to be used during Banned Books week or throughout the year (cost $20). The site reviews "Life" space coverage since 1957, but is mostly an homage to the late astronaut Christa McAuliffe, in her own words, and a rosy preview of NASAâ s future. Many fine photos and Web space links will also be found here.

NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) has recently released the latest version of this program (DOS 3.1 or greater), which makes the tables, charts, and text in seven major education statistics publications considerably more accessible to researchers, allowing them to search over 2,600 items and view, download, or print them. Items can be searched five ways and files can be downloaded in ASCII or Lotus .wk1 format. It is this ability to find exactly the files needed, and convert them into a format that allows further statistical manipulation, that gives EdSearch its power. Don't be fooled by the clunky DOS interface that harkens back to the 1980s; this is a powerful program, with a tremendous amount of data. Note that about 12.5 MB of disk space are needed to hold the uncompressed files. [JS]

The main page offers no fewer than 36 subject areas for browsing, from drama and poetry to feminism and rhetoric. The "new items" list is constantly updated, showing new texts and resources that are added irregularly (sometimes several in a day, sometimes one in a fortnight). Texts prepared for the English Server, such as Edward Bellamy's _Looking Backward_, made available 11/28/96, are offered both in chapter-length HTML pages and as PostScript files. Chaos is an interdisciplinary science founded on the idea that "nonlinear deterministic systems can behave in an apparently unpredictable and chaotic manner." The department's homepage has been divided into three main sections: General Info, Publications, and Pointers. The General Info section holds brief descriptions of the group's research interests as well as a Chaos Pictures Gallery. The Publications section will be of most value to researchers as it contains general references, abstracts, and papers. The online papers (which come in a variety of formats) consist of preprints and published articles on bifurcations, fractal basin boundaries, quantum chaos, general chaos, and more.
