Nitrogen Fixation. (1994)

news:bionet.n2-fixation

Most people don’t think of bacteria as a handy and useful thing to have around. You clean them, spray them, call them bad names. Just hope they don’t go on strike and stop carrying ammonia-bound nitrogen to their designated delivery areas, causing the collapse of the food chain right at the weakest link (you). See such nitrogen fixing in action and discover how this process keeps pizza and Chinese food.

The Nizkor Project, one of the largest online repositories of primary documents related to the Holocaust, is in the final stages of converting the Israel State Archives' extensive records of the Adolf Eichmann trial and placing them online. Eichmann, who supervised the implementation of the "Final Solution," escaped to Argentina after the war, where he was secretly apprehended by Israeli agents in 1960 and brought to Israel for trial. The trial took place in the spring and summer of 1961, after which Eichmann was convicted of crimes against the Jewish people and crimes against humanity and executed on 31 May 1962. The complete trial records are offered in two sections, the District Court Sessions and the Judgement. The first currently contains three volumes of trial proceedings, through June 29, 1961. NMEN: A Free Recycling Marketplace (1996)

http://www.earthcycle.com/g/p/earthcycle//

What may well become the world's largest recycling center is now up and running in the virtual community. At the National Materials Exchange Network (NMEN), Internauts gather to exchange used and surplus materials and goods. To participate, all you need to do is log on and create an account. Accounts are offered free of charge, but you're required to fill out a short form, giving your name, e-mail address, and a few other details. Once your user name and password have been confirmed, you can enter the system and take a look around. Browse through thirty categories of available and wanted items, including paper products, scrap metal, glass, computer components, solvents, plastics and rubber, construction materials, and others. Searches can be conducted by area code, state, or region. In addition to the materials and goods exchange, the NMEN provides a comprehensive index of environmental and recycling services. Once again, searching is simple with the tools provided online.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art ( discussed in the December 22, 1995 Scout Report ) contains the Thomas J. Watson Library, a research library that is, according to the Museum, one of the largest art museum libraries in the world. The library contains over 360,000 cataloged titles in various formats. Recently, the Museum provided access to its library catalog, Watsonline, via the Metropolitan web site. Watsonline contains about 70 percent of the library's holdings, including all cataloged materials since 1980. The catalog can be searched by any of six variables, including shelf browse (which can be exploited whether or not users are familiar with the MMA call number system). [JS]

To celebrate the treasures in its over 110 million item collection, the Library of Congress simultaneously opened an ongoing exhibition and this website on May 1. The site is divided into three parts: memory (history), reason (philosophy), and imagination (fine arts). At present there are 61 treasures, including the items found in President Lincoln's pocket after his assassination, Alexander Graham Bell's notebook entry for March 10, 1876 ("Mr. Watson--Come Here--I want to see you"), and an example of imaginative book design from the Janus Press. The top treasure is a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence. Each treasure is briefly introduced, and the user can then click on a thumbnail image to retrieve a much larger image and more detailed explanation. The online exhibition will provide a "cumulative record of many items that have been on display." [JS]

NOBLE Web: North of Boston Library Exchange (1998)

http://www.geocities.com/ikind_babel/babel/babel.html

When BABEL (version 95A) appeared in the Scout Report, it was already legendary in the Net community. Irving Kind's massive glossary, available since 1989, contains hundreds of computer related acronyms from AA (Auto Answer) to ZSL (Zero Slot LAN). It is updated three times per year and is available via the web, FTP, and the same listserv as announced in the February 3, 1995 Scout Report (although the command is different--see Appendix B at the site). It also contains a brief introduction to the smiley emoticons in email, and a handy listing of country domain names. NOBLE, begun as a gopher site, has migrated to the web. It was one of the earliest attempts by a public library consortium to categorize quality sites. Today it contains briefly annotated links to resources in 24 subject areas from arts & architecture to statistics. [JS]

Noesis: Philosophical Research On-Line (1998)

Designed by the makers of Argos (discussed in the Scout Report for November 1, 1996 ) and Hippias (discussed in the Scout Report for September 26, 1997 ), this new search engine offers access to resources and works in progress by philosophy professionals. The editor, Anthony F. Beavers of Evansville University, describes the site as a "dangerous experiment" in that essays by scholars are not peer-reviewed, but rather evaluated according to the "accreditation model." Noesis will include works by authors holding PhDs or attending PhD programs. This model is used in the interest of bypassing the professional political motivations for publishing (e.g. tenure), and returning to the original ideal--the dissemination of knowledge. Regardless, the papers accessed through Noesis offer a useful cross-section of philosophy as it is being taught and written about today. Additional resources containe

Nomad (1996)

http://www.demon.co.uk/webnomad

This simple, no-frills travel site makes up in sincerity what it lacks in design. Nomad is the brainchild of a group of British travelers who wanted to share their first-hand knowledge and experiences with other travelers on the Web. Limited (for now) to the "Englishspeaking world," Web Nomad covers Great Britain, Australia, the U.S., Canada, and Ireland. Each section is divided into subsections (broken down by location), and offers tips on what to eat, where to stay, and what to see and do in each city or country. Contributions to any and all sections are encouraged, and some of the most rece

Normandy 1944-Encyclopedia Britannica [RealPlayer, Shockwave] (1998)

http://normandy.eb.com

Fifty-four years ago this month, the outcome of the Allied invasion of "Fortress Europe" was still very much in doubt. Although a secure beachhead had been established, the Allied armies found it very difficult to breakout into France, and a stalemate seemed quite possible. Britannica Online has created an outstanding site which documents the amazing story of the Normandy invasion, from the build-up to D-Day, to the eventual breakout into Northern France. The site is organized in five sections, each of which is anchored with an essay by leading military historian John Keegan. Each section offers supplementary articles, documentary and newsreel footage, personal histories, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles from famous war journalists such as Ernie Pyle, photos, and interactive maps. Additional features at this handsome and well organized site include sections on key personalities, weap

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) (1997)

http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html#final

The federal government has recently unveiled the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which will provide common industry definitions for Canada, Mexico, and the US. NAICS replaces the older Standard Industrial Classification System (SIC) in the US, where implementation of NAICS will begin this year with the Census Bureau's 1997 Economic Census. This site provides the NAICS implementation time schedule, NAICS and SIC comparability tables, and a number of issue papers and concept reports relating to the new system. Most of these documents are offered in either PDF or ASCII formats. While the site is probably most useful to specialists, it does provide a thorough overview of this new structure for comparing economic and financial statistics of the NAFTA partners. [MD]
