A vote by the Kansas Board of Education on Wednesday will change the way science is taught in the sunflower state. The decision, to virtually do away with any mention of evolution from the school curriculum, is a huge victory for those espousing creationism. The fact that theories of evolution will not be included in state assessment tests may also discourage teachers from including material on evolution in their science classes. The New York Times article offers basic information about the decision and the opportunity to join a "religion in the schools" forum hosted by The Times. The Wichita Eagle article gives more local coverage of the story with some colorful quotes from board members. Two sites which provide background information from both perspectives of this debate are The Creation Research Society and the National Center for Science Education, Inc. Professor Scott Russell of the University of Oklahoma Department of Botany and Microbiology maintains this meta-site, which is really two sites in one. It contains a "link of the day" archive (five days a week), consisting of rated and annotated sites, available via the web page and a mailing list. These links are then incorporated into a subject hierarchy (Site Index) in over forty topics including cell biology, horticulture, dendrology, and phytopathology, among others. Particularly authoritative sites are marked with an exclamation point. The site is searchable. Aimed at an "advanced high school (AP-biology) and college level" audience, it has a somewhat whimsical tone, but the time and care that went into selecting, annotating, and rating hundreds of sites is evident in the quality of the final product. Another addition to the recent wave of multimedia search engines (see the Scout Report for October 9, 1998 ), Scour.Net allows users to search for audio, video, images, and animation and then access these files directly, without visiting the site. Poor spellers and sloppy typists will appreciate Scour.Net's Smartmatch system, which returns results that are closest to the query, even if the spelling is different. Users can choose between a simple keyword search or an advanced search, which allows selection of source and media type. Additional content at the site includes a daily multimedia feature and a Media Resources page with links to tools for viewing, listening to, and creating multimedia files. [MD]

The Internet Scout Project Research Team, charged with investigating and developing Internet resource discovery tools, has published an article in the June 1998 issue of D-Lib Magazine. The Scout Research Team's first project involves linking geographically distributed metadata collections into one unified, searchable collection. Their article, entitled "A Distributed Architecture for Resource Discovery Using Metadata," discusses an infrastructure "which uses standard Internet protocols, such as the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and the Common Indexing Protocol (CIP), to distribute queries, return results, and exchange index information." It further explains "the advantages of using linked collections of authoritative metadata as an alternative to using a keyword-indexing search-engine for resource discovery." The Scout Report Signpost recently celebrated its first anniversary. Signpost is a browseable and searchable catalog of the annotations that have appeared in the Scout Report and the three subject-specific scout reports. It offers browsing by Library of Congress Classification or Subject Headings and searching via full-text and fielded natural language queries. Within the cataloged Signpost records, users may browse or search 5,910 unique Library of Congress subject headings. At its inception, Signpost contained approximately 425 cataloged resources and, in all, close to 2,200 annotations. Today, Signpost contains 2,195 cataloged resources, in 26 languages, and a total of 4,500 annotations. Since March 1998, Signpost has averaged 2,591 hits per day. Looking to the future, we are working to develop an alternative to the Library of Congress Classification scheme and we are trying to bring

The Scout Report is now over three years old, and the collection of highly selective resources we've developed is three years strong! To give our readers improved access to this valuable archive we have developed an entirely new interface called the Scout Report Signpost. Signpost offers multiple methods of browsing (by subject) or searching the annotations that have appeared in the Scout Report. It provides browsing by Library of Congress Classification or Subject Headings and searching via both a Quick Search (full-text) and Advanced Search (fielded) interface, which use natural language querying. The Internet Scout cataloging group has applied both established and emerging standards such as AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules) and the Dublin Core, a schema for resource description. At this time approximately 425 annotations have been fully cataloged and are available for browsing

Areas of site management covered include server, statistics, HTML editor/site management, hyperlink management, and graphical/design solutions. Individual tools are discussed and some tips are also given on topics such as choosing an HTML editor or site management tool, creating graphics with low file size, and creating easily navigable sites through simple design techniques. While search engines like Excite add "channels" of information organized by subject to help Internauts find the information they want, subject guides provide even more value: individuals maintain coverage of specific subjects, adding a level of human filtering between resources and the user. The Mining Company site at this time contains over 200 subject guides in 13 subject areas, each maintained by a "guide." Under the main hierarchy are sub-hierarchies, which can be browsed via drop-down menus. Guides are standardized and contain annotated resource lists, "best of the net" sections, and features sections that highlight specific areas of the topic. Progressive Networks RealAudio has ended its beta test period for the 3.0 version of its streaming audio software. The 3.0 player is freely available. The basic advantage to the 3.0 version is improved sound quality, especially over ISDN or better bandwidth. RealAudio also offers an enhanced, for fee version of the player which allows scanning of the Internet for radio stations, among other features. For more information on RealAudio see the Scout Toolkit Latest Tools and Technology Section. [JS]
