Street: An Urban Sketchbook Robert Henry Feinâ s urban home is Seattle, Washington. On display at this site are samples of his cartoons, posters, logos, packaging, type, and lettering. All of his work is not of street scenes, but all of it is scenic. See "Man Schlepping Groceries" or the interactively clever "KIND VANDALISM, A Street Urban Improvement Project" for a taste of Feinâ s keen sense of beauty and insouciance toward city living. The stylistic predominance of grays, whites, and clean black lines is simple, subtle, and powerful. Street: An Urban Sketchbook

This week's In the News returns to Kosovo, where humanitarian workers and government officials warn that the refugee crisis is rapidly spinning out of control. What appears to be an organized and systematic expulsion of the ethnic Albanian population from Kosovo has created the worst humanitarian disaster in Europe since World War II. According to UN refugee officials, over 220,000 persons have fled or been expelled from Kosovo over the last ten days, to Albania, Macedonia, or Montenegro. With entry into Macedonia ground to an almost complete halt, Albania swollen with over 120,000 refugees, and thousands still behind them, the Kosovo-Macedonia border in particular has become a humanitarian nightmare; little food, shelter, or sanitation is available for people who have been forced from their homes with almost nothing. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has created

This week, Space Shuttle mission STS-93 deployed the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the world's most powerful X-Ray telescope. The third of NASA's "Great Observatories," the Chandra X-Ray Observatory will study X-Rays rather than visible light (the Hubble Space Telescope) or gamma rays (the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory). These two sites offer overviews and news of the Observatory and its mission. The first, operated for NASA by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, provides resources for students, scientists, the press, and general users. In the Public Information and Education section, users will find photos, a field guide, and educational materials. The Scientific User Support Section includes detailed target information, various documents, newsletters, and information on the Emission Line Project (ELP). In an astounding development, images from the Italian/Dutch BeppoSAX satellite and Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite have detected a "cosmic gamma ray burst [that] released a hundred times more energy than previously theorized, making it the most powerful explosion since the creation of the universe in the Big Bang." According to Professor George Djorgovski of the California Institute of Technology, "For about one or two seconds, this burst was as luminous as all the rest of the entire universe." The burst, which is about 12 billion light-years away, may prompt scientists to rethink the theory of gamma ray bursts. A National Aeronautics and Space Administration news release summarizes the discovery. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center FTP site contains images of the burst, some of which are captioned. Sublime Anxiety: The Gothic Family and the Outsider (1998)
Visit this virtual exhibition, based on the University of Virginia's Sadleir-Black Collection of Gothic Books, for an introduction to Gothic books, the pulp fiction of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The exhibition traces the history of the genre from the 1790s to the present. Book dealer Michael Sadleir set out to acquire first editions of everything in the Northanger Canon, a list of the defining books of the Gothic craze in England in the early nineteenth century, compiled by Jane Austen and set down in her book, Northanger Abbey. Sublime Anxiety starts with the Northanger Canon and includes sections on women Gothic authors, vampires, the origins of the detective novel, and modern Gothic author Anne Rice. Images of book covers and illustrations are accompanied by descriptive captions. [DS]

The list will focus "on both strategic-level and practical issues involving political system development and viability, the democratizing process, the roles of external humanitarian and political intervention, and those indigenous traditional political elements which enrich and complicate modern political life in Africa." Submissions will be accepted regarding sub- and supra-Saharan nations as well as adjacent islands. [MD]
