a new network information discovery and retrieval system form the folks at UC Boulder who brought us Netfind -- is an integrated set of tools to gather, extract, organize, search, cache, and replicate relevant information across the Internet. With modest effort users can tailor Harvest to digest information in many different formats, and offer custom search services on the Internet. Moreover, Harvest makes very efficient use of network traffic, remote servers, and disk space. A number of content indexes have been built with Harvest and are available for general use to illustrate the capabilities of Harvest, including an index of AT&T's 1-800 phone numbers, an index of WWW home pages, and an index of over 24,000 Computer Science technical reports from around the world. Harvest has been in beta-testing for four months, and as of November 7 the software is available on the Internet. You can

The Henrietta Leavitt Flat Screen Space Theater (1995)

http://www.voicenet.com/~peterscc/index.html

The Henrietta Leavitt Flat Screen Space Theater is named for an American astronomer working at the Harvard Observatory in the beginning of this century. The site is authored by Carolyn Collins Petersen, an accomplished astronomy writer and part-time Hubble researcher. Carolyn takes viewers to "The Planetarium Show That Never Ends," where various heavenly bodies are displayed and described in non-scientific but informative and inspiring ways. Next stop is the "The Space Image Gallery" where we can view beautiful photos of star birth, Jupiter's Moons, and the Cat's Eye Nebula, all with brief, lucid descriptions. The Flat Screen Space Theater is not so much educational as it is inspirational for those of us who haven't stopped recently to view the photos coming back from space, and so have forgotten what all the fuss is about.

The Heritage Foundation -- Social Security (1999)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/security/security.htm

Perhaps the most successful and certainly the most popular of the New Deal social welfare programs, Social Security has made a critical difference in the living standards of many older Americans, especially women. However, the program faces difficulty in the years ahead because of the shifting demographic of the American population. An aging population means that, by about the year 2012, more money will be drawn for benefits than is received from payroll taxes, and by 2032, the system's trust fund will be empty. In his State of the Union address (discussed above), the President signalled a new commitment by his administration to shore up Social Security, primarily by diverting 62 percent of the current and projected future budget surpluses. While some analysts and politicians are wary of the details, particularly the President's idea to invest a portion of this money in the stock market

The History of Phrenology on the Web (1999)

Popular in early nineteenth-century Europe (especially in Britain), and later in America, phrenology was the controversial belief that one could determine the character and intellectual traits of a person by examining the shape and contours of the skull ("reading the bumps on your head"). Created and maintained by John van Wyhe of Cambridge University, this site claims to be "the largest and most comprehensive website for the history of phrenology." Contents include the full text of several phrenological works, phrenology images, a brief introduction and timeline, some contemporary criticism, and a critical bibliography. Links to other online texts and related sites are also provided. Despite some poor choices of background and text color that make portions of the site difficult to read, this site is a good resource for historians and general users interested in what its practitioners ca

The Household Cyclopedia of General Information (1998)

http://members.xoom.com/mspong/

This 1881 reference book was designed to help nineteenth-century households stay healthy and productive. Need to know how to winter your bees? Build a barometer? Bleed a patient with leeches? Your answers are here. The site, a part-time project of freelance webmaster Matthew Spong, evokes a time when many households were largely self-sufficient, and the value of a book explaining how to amputate a limb, for example, could be immeasurable. Spong discovered Henry Hartshorne's wonderful compendium in a market in Sydney and has almost completed scanning the text and converting it to HTML. We look forward to the final chapter, Miscellaneous, containing everything from Proof-reading to Dialysis. [TK]

The Hydra (1998)

http://info.ox.ac.uk/jtap/hydra/

The Hydra was produced by patients at the Craiglockhart War Hospital during the First World War. Two of Craiglockhart's most famous patients, the soldier-poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon both contributed to the magazine, Owen assuming the editorship in August 1917 until his departure a little over a month later. This site features beautifully digitized facsimiles of the eighteen issues of The Hydra from Owen's personal collection that have been deposited at the English Faculty Library, University of Oxford. Users can browse the issues by page or use a search service which covers the eight issues produced during Owen's stay. To gain the full potential of the search service, users will need to download a PC only plug-in, but Mac users can still search the images, albeit without full functionality. [MD]

Currently there is no good solution for net-surfers or casual seekers with an interest or query in a particular subject. This project attempts to centralize links to the best pages on the net offering help or useful information. The goal is to become a main crossroads which net-users will come to whenever looking for technical assistance or specific information on any subject. The main advantage over existing services such as search engines is that all links are carefully selected for quality and usefulness by a human. i If you have a web…

The Inspector General's Survey of the Cuban Operation --GWU NSA [.zip] (1998)

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/19980222.htm

After spending 36 years locked in a safe in the CIA director's office, this highly critical report of the CIA's handling of the Bay of Pigs Invasion was made public on February 22, 1998, after a two year Freedom of Information Act effort by The National Security Archive at George Washington University (discussed in the September 20, 1996 Scout Report ). The top secret report, officially known as The Inspector General's Survey of the Cuban Operation, strongly criticizes the CIA for misinforming Kennedy administration officials, poor planning and intelligence, treating rebel leaders as "puppets," and conducting an overt military operation beyond "Agency responsibility as well as Agency capability." Note that the report is available as a series of large .zip files of scanned images. They may be available as HTML files in the future. [MD]

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (1998)

http://www.itis.usda.gov/plantproj/itis/index.html

Six US federal agencies have worked together to develop an efficient system for naming and classifying all of nature's living organisms. As the basic currency of scientific research, management, and education, ITIS is "a database of the current names and classifications of all biota." The website is organized into three main sections: About ITIS (general overview), Data Access (how to query the ITIS database), and TRED (the taxonomic experts behind the ITIS database). The core of the site is the Data Access section, which describes how to locate, access, and download scientific names and other information for a taxon. The ITIS database may be queried by full or partial Scientific Name, Vernacular (Common) Name, or TSN (Taxonomic Serial Number). Typical returns are Scientific Name, Vernacular (Common) Name, TSN, Author, Taxonomic Rank, and Synonym Name or TSN; note that the review process

Users enter an integral (instructions for suitable notation are given at the site) and then press the "DO IT!" button. The answer is returned in one of four user-selected formats: text, ASCII, standard form, and traditional form. The last form is returned as an image, so that Greek letters are displayed correctly. The site also offers some background on integration: uses of integrals, the history of integration, and how the Integrator works. Of course, there is a link to information on the full version of Mathematica at the bottom of the page. [ML]

http://sdb.bio.purdue.edu/fly/aimain/1aahome.htm

Produced by Dr. Thomas Brody of the Society for Developmental Biology and hosted by Purdue University, this site offers users the benefit of a great deal of original research into the genes involved in the development of the fruit fly. Genes are organized three ways: alphabetically, by biochemical function, and by developmental function. Each gene's page begins with summary information and a FlyBase ID, followed by a biological overview, and then sections on gene structure, protein structure, regulation, developmental biology, and finally a list of references. In addition to the genetic information, there are sections on tissue and organ development, and morphogenesis. As Dr. Brody points out, "Currently, Drosophila is the only organism for which one can begin with a list of genes active in the egg and follow the morphological changes and gene interactions through to adulthood."
