To celebrate J.J. Thomson's discovery of the electron in 1897, the Institute of Physics (in collaboration with the Science Museum, London) and the American Institute of Physics ( discussed in the February 7, 1997 Scout Report ) offer online centennial exhibits. The IOP-Science Museum site offers sections on What is an Electron, Seeing with Electrons, and Electrons in our Lives. However, it is highlighted by Discovery, 1897, which contains a QuickTime account of the discovery, a Shockwave animation of it, and an archive recording of the great man himself discussing the discovery. The AIP site concentrates more on the discovery process itself, tracing it back to the 1850s, recounting the 1897 experiments, the response to them, and their ultimate legacy. [JS]

The Sci-Fi Channel has recently added RealAudio (3.0 or later) renderings of original, classic, and adapted science fiction stories. New stories are offered biweekly, weekly, and monthly, respectively. At present the "original" section contains Into the Sun, performed by Mark Hamill, "classics" contains the 1950 broadcast of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles, and "adaptations" contains Kafka's The Country Doctor . The site promises "synchroniz[ation of] text, illustrations, photos, and animations with the on-going streaming audio." However, the audio alone is more than effective for those with slower connections. The Dominion web site also contains Sci-Fi Channel program listings and other information of interest to science fiction fans. [JS]

The National Gallery of Art has created this online feature to accompany its new exhibition of the drawings of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609). Prefaced by a lengthy introductory essay by Diane De Grazia, the exhibition catalogue contains ten sketches dating from 1582 to 1606. Each image page contains a thumbnail of the sketch, a few paragraphs of explanatory text, notes, provenance, bibliographic references, and in some cases, additional related images. A bibliography of some 300 related scholarly sources is also provided. [ATW]

Created and maintained by the University of Aberdeen Historic Collections, this site offers access to images of 1,278 loose engravings and woodcuts that form part of the MacBean Stuart and Jacobite Collection. In addition to the images, the collection contains approximately 3,500 books and 1,000 pamphlets which "cover every aspect of the Jacobite rebellions, the causes and effects, and the personalities, royal, national and local." Users have two options for retrieving images: a keyword search or simple browse. Since the latter is simply a list of captions for all 1278 images and is not divided into any categories, users will probably find the keyword search more efficient. Each image is accompanied by a caption "detailing the subject and where known the artist, engraver and printer." [MD]

At the heart of this resource on the French sociologist and philosopher Emile Durkheim, provided by Professor Robert Alun Jones of the University of Illinois, is its bibliographic section. Included are both a complete chronological bibliography of Durkheim's published works, and an alphabetical bibliography of hundreds of items about Durkheim. An explanation of the process involved in producing these bibliographies is provided at the site. This site also features two full texts (French only at this time), highlighted by a set of lecture notes taken by the philosopher Andre Lalonde from a course given by Durkheim in 1883-84. A brief biography of Durkheim, a timeline, a list of lecture courses taught by Durkheim, and a glossary of pertinent terms are available. Much content at the site is informed by Steven Lukes' Durkheim: His Life and Work: A Historical and Critical Study . [JS]

Electronic Commerce has been in existence for little more than three years, but due to its enormous capacity to affect "economic activities and social environments," it has already had a huge impact on retail, finance, and communications, representing 30 percent of GDP. This 156-page report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development examines the past and potential impact that e-commerce promises to have on business and the economy. The report is broken into five chapters, which need to be downloaded separately, including "Growth of electronic commerce: present and potential," "Electronic commerce, jobs and skills," and "Societal implications of electronic commerce," each with its own set of charts and graphs. A report summary is also included. [EM]
