The Right-to-Know Network (RTK Net) (1999)

http://www.rtk.net/rmpsearch.html

The Right-to-Know Network (RTK Net) has recently placed a large database of summaries (approximately 14,000) of risk management plans (RMPs) concerning "worst-case" and less severe accident scenarios at chemical facilities. The RMPs were required of certain chemical facilities and presented to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which originally intended to place them online. However, Congress and the White House, spurred on by warnings of security specialists, objected, arguing that this document might serve as a road map to would-be terrorists. The worst-case-scenario information has been exempted from the Freedom of Information Act for one year to allow the Administration time to address these security concerns. The less-detailed executive summaries, however, were not suppressed and are available from the EPA at the above URL. RTK Net has made these more easily available in

It seems that one of the biggest buzz words of the '90s is safe sex. But what do people really mean by this phrase? And whose definition of safe is the right one? And what s the big deal anyway--aren t diseases like AIDS limited to certain high-risk groups? It s because of questions like these that the Safer Sex Home Page has parked on the Information Superhighway. Safer Sex is an educational site targeted at couples involved in intimate relationships. Among other things, this site provides brochures, pamphlets, and articles that answer some of the most commonly asked questions about safe sex. The materials presented here clarify what is meant by risky sex, explain how sexually active adults can protect themselves from disease, offer interactive user forums in which Web visitors may participate, and include technical information for counselors and health educators.

This is far and away the largest collection of exhibits of any art museum on the Internet. Users can access the imagebase through a simple search interface that allows Boolean AND/OR and truncation searching. There is not a great deal of information about the images--as the museum explains, this is an imagebase, not a database. The sheer number of images available make this a site that other museums should look at closely, and that art lovers in the net community will certainly appreciate. Note that, unfortunately, the search engine is not particularly sophisticated, and records are not split into fields. A search on "Daumier," for example, will turn up images of Daumier as well a

The Science and Engineering of Composting--CUCE (1998)

http://www.cfe.cornell.edu/compost/science.html

The Cornell University Center for the Environment provides this site as a one-stop source of composting information. The science and engineering necessary to truly understand successful composting, including simple and well-explained equations, resides at this site. The content is divided into four categories. Background Information covers four key areas of composting: invertebrates, microbes, chemistry, and physics. Getting the Right Mix introduces composters to the concepts necessary for creating a successful compost pile, including moisture content, bio-availability, and carbon content. Composting Experiments offers ideas for projects to investigate factors influencing the composting process, such as temperature, pH, and invertebrates. Composting Engineering Fundamentals focuses on three engineering principles used in composting: process analysis, odor management, and water quality pr

The SciFaiku Manifesto (1996)

http://www.crew.umich.edu/~brinck/poetry/manifesto.html

SciFaiku is a new form of poetry, based on the haiku, that is burgeoning on the Internet. Key differences are that the sole subject of the poem is science fiction as opposed to nature, the structure of 17 syllables is not as strict as in traditional haiku, and it usually contains a "science" word (as opposed to a "season" word in traditional haiku). It is these science words that pose the greatest challenge, as phrases like "space-time continuum" takes up several syllables. This Web site contains a further elaboration of the form SciFaiku as well as a collection of submitted SciFaikus. There is also a collection of pointers to regular haiku sites, as well as general poetry archives.

The Search Engine Tutorial for Web Designers (1996)

http://www.northernwebs.com/set/

The strange and wondrous ways in which search engines gather their indexes is made a little clearer in this tutorial. Written by a web designer disappointed with how difficult his pages were to find with the standard search engines, this page gives insight into how Infoseek, Lycos, Alta Vista, Excite, Web Crawler, and Open Text catalog web pages. The search strategy of each engine is described, along with tips for how web designers can increase their site's chances of being among the hits returned when users enter relevant search criteria. Although indexing algorithms are constantly being updated, this site presents common-sense guidelines that web designers interested in reaching a wider audience will find useful.

http://lcweb.loc.gov/exhibits/oliphant/

The first of these two new online exhibits highlights the LOC's recent acquisition of 60 cartoon drawings by Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Pat Oliphant. One of the most talented and influential editorial cartoonists in American history, Oliphant has been providing provocative commentary on political and social issues for over 30 years. The US Library of Congress has recently made two substantial additions to its American Memory site. The first contains the premiere release (about 8,000 pages) of the complete George Washington Papers (176,000 pages), which will consist of eight parts published successively through 1999. Documents include correspondence, letterbooks, diaries, journals, books, military records, and reports and notes Washington accumulated between 1741 and 1799. The materials reflect Washington's wide range of interests and activities, including his service as a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, his command of the Revolutionary Army, and his service as the first President. Additional resources include a timeline, essays about the papers, and a select bibliography. The second site, released to coincide with the centennial of the sinking of the USS Maine, offers 53 motion pictures from
