Drop by the Spoon for a cup of coffee and a story when you get a chance. We're here to share stories about our lives, about our travels, about the people we come across. We're telling tall tales and reading our journals. We're giving away bits of ourselves and seeing through other's eyes. We're just a small place, a truck stop off the information highway. It's cold out there and warm and safe in here. Rest your feet. Rest your eyes from your weary road daze. Wrap your hands around a steaming cuppa and listen for a while and maybe talk a little. As the snow begins to melt, the days get longer, the pitchers and catchers report to spring training camp, and baseball fans begin to fantasize about their team (no matter how bad) playing in the Worlds Serious, where better to turn than the "baseball bible," The Sporting News? And, although TSN now tries to be all things to all sports fans, it has provided coverage of baseball since 1886 (there wasn't a non-baseball cover until 1967). The site is highlighted by information and scouting reports on each major league team, written by local beat writers. In addition, there is a Sideline section with general feature articles, a Fantasy League section to help you pick your dream team, and the frames-based Conlon Collection, a rotating selection from the 8,000 baseball photographs taken from 1904 to 1942 by Charles Conlon, Spaulding Guide and TSN photographer. The virtual worldâ s version of MTVâ s "Real World" series has the young set buzzing. In a Peyton Place sort of way, the cast of characters at The Spot bare their real-life dilemmas in an orgy of text, photos, audio and video clips, love, and lust. Ride along with Lon as he laments the loss of Gina, or listen while Carrie frets over her desire to "move forward" with her boyfriend Stacey. This recently expanded site from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History is intended to serve as "the most comprehensive on-line resource about the 186-year-old banner, which inspired the words to the National Anthem." The site offers a number of illustrated short essays, tracing the history of the flag and the national anthem and preservation efforts over the years. It also features several mysteries surrounding the flag that users can try to solve using primary sources and then read a historian's opinion. Educator information and teaching materials, and an online quiz round out the site. Users can browse the site's content via a menu on the left or access selected sections by scrolling over the flag on the main page. [MD]

IBM and the Hermitage Museum present this Website to showcase the vast collections of the State Museum of Russia, founded by Catherine the Great in 1764. A highlight is the Digital Collection, a database of high resolution images of museum artifacts, grouped into twelve browseable categories, such as Paintings, Prints and Drawings; Jewellery; and Machinery and Mechanisms. These categories are further organized in appropriate subdivisions such as artist and title under paintings, and country under machinery. Eventually, IBM Query by Image Content (QBIC) technology will be implemented at the site to allow users to search for images by associating color and shapes. Currently, visitors can take the Virtual Tour, which proceeds through over 20 rooms of the museum, such as the Library of Nicholas II and the Michelangelo Room, observing both the architecture of the Hermitage and artworks on dis

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has made available the full text of the latest version of this annual publication that keeps track of developments in world agriculture. It is divided into three sections, a general world review, regional overviews, and a special section on the agroprocessing sector. The regional overviews highlight six countries this year: Mozambique, Angola, Bangladesh, Peru, Egypt, and the Russian Federation. The site also contains tables of contents for SOFA back to 1993, along with full text of special chapters from each issue. Previous country briefs for eight countries are available. Information about how to purchase the valuable country time-series diskette that accompanies the print volume can be obtained at the site. [JS]

This excellent report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations found that in 1999, 790 million people in the Third World were undernourished, and 34 million in First and Second World nations also did not have enough to eat. Although the number of undernourished people has dropped by 40 million since 1996, a decline of 8 million per year, the world will not be able to meet the 1996 World Food Summit goal of reducing the number of starving people to about 400 million in 2015. This 35-page report is filled with graphically rendered data sets, maps, glossaries of defined terms, and side bars highlighting specific countries and issues. SOFI' s presentation conveys the urgency of the issues surrounding the world's food insecurity clearly and concisely. [EM]

This site, part of the American Journalism Review (AJR) NewsLink, explores the condition of the American Newspaper in an era of increased media competition and conglomeration, decreased editorial independence, and a changing profile for the typical news story. The twelve-part report features stories on the print journalism industry from veteran, prize-winning reporters. For example, Pulitzer Prize winner James V. Risser writes on the loss of the independent American newspaper, CNN correspondent Peter Arnette examines the shrinking coverage of international news at city dailies, veteran Washington correspondents John Herbers and James McCarthy report on the lack of interest in hard news in the Nation's capitol, and in "Fear.com," Chip Brown, a former reporter for the Washington Post, investigates the efforts of American newspapers to deal with Internet competition. Rutgers University's Center for Urban Policy Research, as part of a contractual agreement with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has recently released Version 2.2a of this well-known database, which provides information on over 3,000 variables, gathered from many sources, for 77 American cities and suburbs from Birmingham, Alabama to Cheyenne, Wyoming (city coverage can be quickly obtained from the INT_22a.txt file). Variables concern "employment and economic development, demographic measures, housing and land use, income and poverty, fiscal conditions, and a host of other health, social, and environmental indicators." The data is available in a variety of formats; a multi-faceted snapshot database, rather than a detailed time series one, describes this resource. [JS]
About one billion people, two-thirds of them women, will enter the next century unable to read or write according to this year's UNICEF State of the World's Children report (described in the December 19, 1997 Scout Report ). The report focuses on education and predicts that illiteracy levels will continue to rise, primarily because only one in four children in impoverished countries are in school. Users can download the full text of the report in sections or in its entirety in .pdf format. A summary, a special feature on educating girls, fact sheets, and several Quicktime videos are also available. [MD]

This companion site to a recent PBS Frontline (produced in collaboration with the New York Times) offers one of the most balanced and thoughtful investigations available to date of suspected terrorist organizer Osama Bin Laden. A wealthy Saudi Arabian exile with a $5 million bounty on his head, Bin Laden has been charged with directing the 1998 US embassy bombings in East Africa (see the August 18, 1998 Scout Report for Social Sciences ). However, this report reveals that his role and power may be exaggerated by US officials and also raises pointed questions about the evidence used to justify retaliatory missile strikes. With interviews, analysis, and a transcript and video segment from a May 1998 interview with Bin Laden, the site offers a critical review of his life experiences, motives, and current activities. The site also explores the stories of two men indicted for the East Africa

The Library of Congress American Memory Project (last discussed in the November 20, 1998 Scout Report ) has begun to release digitized documents from the world's largest collection of original Thomas Jefferson papers. The collection, which will be comprised of approximately 83,000 images, will be released as nine Series or groupings, ranging in date from 1606 to 1827. The documents reflect Jefferson's broad intellectual and political interests and his central role in American politics from the second Continental Congress through his two terms as President, 1801-1809. The first release, about 20,000 images, "comprises the first installment of Series 1, General Correspondence, dating from 1621 through 1789, and all of Series 8, relating to Virginia history, from 1606-1737." Users may search the document images by keyword or browse by date (Series 1, Correspondence) or by volume (Series 8

The Special Collections Department of the University of Virginia Library has recently launched this site, a companion to an exhibit running from November 7, 1997 to March 4, 1998. The UVA Library holds one of the world's largest collections of Tibetan literature; this site is designed to "demystify the sacred Tibetan texts on death and dying and to create an opportunity to share the wisdom of these ancient beliefs and practices." The text and artwork sections highlight the site; they contain six and three subsections respectively. Under texts there are explanations, and page samples of Sutras, Tantras, The Art of Dying, and Transitions to the Other World, among others. The still-developing artworks section contains explanations and/or examples of selected scroll paintings, statuary, and ceremonial art. The only drawback to this fascinating site is the confusing Javascript navigation inte

This site, provided by Media On Demand, Inc., is meant to be an information clearinghouse on the ongoing tobacco litigation in the US. The Document Archive section highlights this work in progress; it offers links to search indexes for tobacco documents from six major companies or industry-related entities. The first of these documents were released to the public at the end of last week. Documents are accessible via various search mechanisms; explanations of search strategies and indexes should be studied carefully at each of the document sites before searching. Note that page image legibility varies. The site also contains a proposed resolution of the litigation, industry news releases, and industry produced issue briefs, among other resources. [JS]

Computers, as everyone knows, seems to get cheaper every day. Many users find that they can now buy twice the computer for half the money they spent a few years ago. A brand new computer, however, may not be the only answer for users wishing for better performance or simply a level playing field, as prices for computer components have kept pace with whole computers. This new report from PC Magazine Online is designed to help users decide if and how to upgrade their present hardware to get a few more years out of their original investment. The report is composed of three main sections (Core Components, Multimedia, and Internet and I/O Connections), each of which analyzes the merits and prices of various upgrades, and offers tips and instructions for installation.
