Voice of the Shuttle The shuttle referred to in the title is not a space shuttle but rather the part of a loom that passes in and out of the thread and weaves it into fabric. The metaphor is apt--the humanities pages found here weave in and out from one another, each subject page connecting to many related links. This outstanding new addition to the US Library of Congress American Memory Collection is an online presentation of a contemporary ethnographic field collection that documented the lives of Dust Bowl migrants living in Farm Security Administration (FSA) camps in California in 1940-41. The highlight of the site is a very large collection of audio titles (334 in all), available in both RealAudio and .wav formats. Users can browse a list of over 100 song titles that includes links to each song's full text and recordings made in an FSA camp. Other audio titles include interviews, recordings of camp meetings, and more songs (without text). Voices from the Gaps: Women Writers of Color (1997)

http://voices.cla.umn.edu/

The University of Minnesota offers a growing source of information on women writers of color in the US, aimed at high school and college students. Pages have been created for seventeen writers; contents include biographical and bibliographic information, annotated lists of Internet resources relating to each writer, and, when available, images and audio files. Writers, including Sandra Cisneros, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Alice Walker, can be browsed by name, birthplace, racial or ethnic background, and significant historical dates. However, no search option is available at this time. Visitors to the site can interact with each other in the Discussion Room, a forum for posting and responding to questions about the individual writers. Teachers, students, and independent scholars are encouraged to contribute research and writing about authors not already covered. [AG]

The Institute has long studied the history, culture, and social institutions of African Americans, and now with their official Web page their work is accessible to millions of people on the Net. This site has eight areas to explore, with topics such as research projects, conferences, working groups, and publications. Unfortunately these areas only explain what the Institute is currently working on, without the actual findings or reports available online. Most areas do explain where to find this information offline.

W3C Announcement (1998)

http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/

The World Wide Web Consortium, the organization that develops common web protocols, has issued this "first public working draft" of the Web Accessibility Initiative. Driven by accessibility improvements in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) 4.0 specification (discussed in the December 19, 1997 Scout Report ), these guidelines seek to insure accessibility to the web by people with disabilities. Guidelines are provided in ten areas, including style sheets, audio-video, tables, links, and user input forms. Each of the recommendations is labeled as either "required" or "recommended" to provide full access. Many of the recommendations are also valid for earlier versions of HTML. [JS]

W3C Publishes First Public Working Draft of Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) 1.0 (1998)

http://www.w3.org/Press/1998/XSL-WD

The World Wide Web Consortium has recently issued the first public working draft of XSL, a stylesheet language which "allows information about presentation to be kept separate from the content. This allows more flexible and efficient Website maintenance, makes Web pages more accessible, and makes the Web faster." XSL, a method of styling XML (Extensible Markup Language, discussed in the April 3, 1998 Scout Report ), joins Cascading Style Sheets (discussed in the May 15, 1998 Scout Report ) as stylesheet languages the W3C plans to develop. http://www.w3.org/TR/PR-rdf-syntax/

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) Model and Syntax Specification, a creation of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), is one of the most exciting new Web technologies to be inching its way into existence. RDF is a basis for encoding and using data about documents or Web pages which purports to facilitate the automation of their processing. This RDF Model and Syntax Specification document has recently been granted Proposed Recommendation status and is no longer expected to change substantially, which means that anyone interested in RDF development or use should take a close look at this document. While RDF can be encoded in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and this specification describes an XML-based encoding of RDF, RDF is a data model independent of XML and is defined by the specification in this sense as well. The RDF Model and Syntax Specification document is an interesting

Wacky Web Tales (1996)

http://www.hmco.com/hmco/school/tales

This learning tool is an innovative way to help kids master the parts of speech. The child (ages 10 and up) just fills in the blanks as prompted (i.e., with past tense verb, adjective, adverb), and then calls up his or her Wacky Tale, finding the words inserted, and resulting in lines such as "the hairy watermelon hovered over the bed." Itâ s just the kind of nuttiness that kids love.
