Water Baby: Experience of Water Birth (1998)
If you re a parent-to-be looking for alternatives to the hustle and bustle that goes on during a hospital birthing experience, you might want to wade on over to Water Baby, an underwater birthing reference guide on the World Wide Web. Parents who have experienced underwater births claim that it gives their newborn a gentle introduction into the world, uniquely different from the bright lights, loud noises, and cold air in a hospital delivery room. The basic concept of the water birth is that Mom sits in a nice, warm tub, with Dad and the midwife or doctor nearby to help. The warmth of the bath is said to ease the labor pains while providing Mom with plenty of room to move freely. The baby is delivered underwater, then is slowly brought up to breathe air. A natural transition to air breathing eliminates any need for slapping or otherwise roughly stimulating the infant.

Watson and the Shark (1998)

Watson and the Shark is part of a series of in-depth studies of works of art presented as Web features by the National Gallery of Art. This narrative John Singleton Copley painting provides the National Gallery an opportunity to do some fairly traditional art historical teaching. Watson and the Shark depicts an incident that took place in 1749: Brook Watson, a young sailor out for a swim, was attacked by a shark and saved by his shipmates. The shark bit off part of Watson's leg, but he recovered and went on to live a well-documented, one-legged life as a merchant and politician in London, and eventually served a term as mayor from 1796-97. It is likely that Watson commissioned the painting from Copley. The Web feature includes items such as images of Watson from other museums and additional examples of Copley's paintings, so that users can explore the stories associated with the painting
