Some people just cannot follow directions. Moreover, some go out of their way to disobey orders. The Black Hole of the Web appeals to the anarchist in all of us. When first visiting this site, users are presented with a black square. There are explicit directions on the screen: Whatever you do, do not go near the Black Hole! Stay away! This is where common sense fails most people. Black holes are bad. Very bad. They suck matter in and don t let it out. Yet even with this knowledge, thousands of people have dared to enter its depths and found to their dismay that they are stuck. Efforts to pull-out are mocked by messages telling the user, I told you so. You shouldn t have entered.

The trivia section is divided into four parts and is of great interest to serious fans of this classic film. There's a "Did you notice . . . Showing the tremendous potential of the web as a source of data retrieval, both these sites allow the user, through forms-based interfaces, to extract data in specific formats. A recent enhancement to the University of Virginia site is the availability of selected National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) from 1959 to 1995. These accounts "show the value and composition of the nation's output and the distribution of incomes generated in its production." Users can select data sets and time periods, and the site returns a graph and table of the data. The table can then be downloaded to the local machine. According to the aptly-located author of this page (in Eden Prairie, Minnesota), flocks of bluebirds were once so plentiful that they frequently created carpets of blue when landing on suburban lawns. The preferred nesting sites for the bluebird are the cavities found in dead trees, but creeping efficiency rarely allows dead trees to stand very long these days. For a $5 donation, you can join the Bluebird Recovery Program and learn how to build a birdhouse that will attract some azure-feathered friends.
