Black Hole of the Web (1996)

http://www.ravenna.com/blackhole.html

Some people just cannot follow directions. Moreover, some go out of their way to disobey orders. The Black Hole of the Web appeals to the anarchist in all of us. When first visiting this site, users are presented with a black square. There are explicit directions on the screen: Whatever you do, do not go near the Black Hole! Stay away! This is where common sense fails most people. Black holes are bad. Very bad. They suck matter in and don t let it out. Yet even with this knowledge, thousands of people have dared to enter its depths and found to their dismay that they are stuck. Efforts to pull-out are mocked by messages telling the user, I told you so. You shouldn t have entered.

Blast From the Past--NMNH (1998)

http://www.nmnh.si.edu/paleo/blast/

A recently recovered deep-sea core supports theories that an asteroid collided with the earth 65 million years ago, around the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs. The Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History's new site, Blast from the Past, contains details on this cataclysmic event. Colorful graphics provide conceptual illustrations of the asteroid impact and aftermath, accompanied by photographs of the deep-sea core. Text summaries, followed by bibliographic references, describe the asteroid hypothesis, the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary, and the utility of deep-sea cores. With links to other paleobiological sites and related museum exhibits, this site is a useful resource for those wanting to know more about fateful asteroid impacts. [LXP]

BLPES Pamphlet Collection [.pdf] (1999)

http://www.blpes.lse.ac.uk/services/guides/pamphlets/

In a welcome move to researchers and historians, the British Library of Political and Economic Science (BLPES) has created an online guide to its large pamphlet collection, containing some 90,000 pamphlets, many from the 19th and early 20th centuries. While covering a number of important public and political issues in British history, the collection also contains a fair amount of European and International materials, including a large number of German-language pamphlets, as well as materials on Latin American trade unions, the League of Nations, pacifism, the two World Wars, and conflict in the Middle East. Users can browse the guide by fifteen topics (e.g., Issues in British history, political parties, social policy, poor laws, transport, etc.) or search the online catalog by subject keyword, author, title, or issuing body. The guide lists pamphlet author, title, and classmark, while th

BLS Selective Access Data (1996)

http://www.lib.virginia.edu/socsci/nipa/

Two of the more impressive sources of interactive US social and economic data are the University of Virginia Social Sciences Data Center and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Selective Access Data site. Showing the tremendous potential of the web as a source of data retrieval, both these sites allow the user, through forms-based interfaces, to extract data in specific formats. A recent enhancement to the University of Virginia site is the availability of selected National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) from 1959 to 1995. These accounts "show the value and composition of the nation's output and the distribution of incomes generated in its production." Users can select data sets and time periods, and the site returns a graph and table of the data. The table can then be downloaded to the local machine. BLS Selective Access allows users to specify exactly what data they would like fro

http://webster.skypoint.net/members/pheo/Blueb.html

According to the aptly-located author of this page (in Eden Prairie, Minnesota), flocks of bluebirds were once so plentiful that they frequently created carpets of blue when landing on suburban lawns. The preferred nesting sites for the bluebird are the cavities found in dead trees, but creeping efficiency rarely allows dead trees to stand very long these days. For a $5 donation, you can join the Bluebird Recovery Program and learn how to build a birdhouse that will attract some azure-feathered friends. The site also offers bluebird artwork and a quick link to its song.

bobdylan.com [RealAudio] (1998)

http://www.bobdylan.com/

bobdylan.com is sponsored by Columbia Records, Dylan's record label. The site is a must for Dylan fans; it contains a browsable listing of the artist's songs and albums. Most songs are accompanied by lyrics, and all of the songs are available in RealAudio format. Lyrics are searchable. The site also contains a selection of live performances, and a section called "old songs," highlighted by a two hour RealAudio broadcast of an interview with Greil Marcus, author of Invisible Republic: Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes, by Jon Carroll for the KFPA (Berkeley, California) radio program "Dead to the World."
