http://math240.lehman.cuny.edu/gugg

The high point of this stunning Web site is a visit to the exhibits at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. A recent exhibition was "Abstraction in the Twentieth Century: Total Risk, Freedom, Discipline." There are also stimulating discussions on related subjects (abstract expressionism, monochrome painting, minimal sculpture) and art forms (theater, poetry, dance, photography). The site is under continuous development and will soon include material on Guggenheim museums in New York Cityâ s Soho; Bilbao, Spain; and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy.

Guide for Writing a Funding Proposal (1998)

http://www.msue.msu.edu/aee/dissthes/guide.htm

S. Joseph Levine, a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education at Michigan State University, originally created these guides to assist his graduate students. Both guides, but especially the first, are very practical and focus on what Levine terms the "quasi-political" aspects of gaining approval for your dissertation, rather than the research process. The Dissertation Guide is divided into the four stages of the project, from the original idea to the defense and post-degree publication. Rather than an extended essay, the guide is a collection of succinct points which offers hints on what to do and what not to do to see the project through in a timely and stress-free (if possible) manner. The Proposal Guide offers a collection of thoughtful writing hints paired with relevant examples, as well as links to a number of related resources. [MD]

http://www.cimi.org/documents/meta_peerreview_announce.html

The Consortium for the Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI) has released a beta version of its "Guide to Best Practice: Dublin Core." The content of the guide is based on the recommendations of a group of eighteen organizations that participated in a testbed project to assess the useability, ease of learning, and adequacy of the Dublin Core (DC) metadata element set when applied to the description of museum and cultural heritage resources. The guide defines each DC metadata element and "presents a brief discussion of tricks, traps, and issues associated with each element along with a range of sample values." The Guide to Best Practice is based on DC 1.0 as it was documented in RFC 2413 (reviewed in the September 11, 1998 Scout Report ). Guides of Alaska (1996)

http://www.alaska.net/~guidesak

The Guides of Alaska (GOA) Web page promotes services for winter camping, "snowmachining," and cross-country cycling, skiing, or hiking treks. Also provided at the site are pictures and summaries of previous adventures, as well as links to Alaskan sports gear companies and to the Snow-A-Rama snowmobiling site. Rudyâ s personal home page offers fishing and snowmobiling photos, as well as a variety of fishing links, sites focused on fly-fishing in Italy, and a fishing lodge in Cuba. If only Sam McGee had accessed this site before leaving Tennessee, he might not have ended up toast.

GuideStar--Donors' Guide to Charities and Nonprofits (1998)

http://www.guidestar.org/

Donors and philanthropists can now more easily compare and monitor organizations to which they may contribute, while nonprofit organizations can perhaps spend less of their resources on fundraising. These are the goals of Philanthropic Research, Inc's GuideStar, a clearinghouse of information on more than 600,000 charities and nonprofit organizations. GuideStar hosts a searchable database, a newsletter, employment and volunteer opportunity listings, and valuable articles in addition to lists of links for both donors and nonprofit organizations. Database information includes brief descriptions of the charities/nonprofits and their programs, funding sources, geographic location(s), and income/asset statements. GuideStar derives its information from 990 tax submissions to the IRS as well as directly from the nonprofit organizations themselves. [JR]

Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses: VA, DOD Continue To Resist Strong Evidence Linking Toxic Causes To Chronic Healt (1997)

http://www.house.gov/reform/reports/gulfweb.htm

The US House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and Oversite published this report, the result of an oversight investigation begun in March 1996. The report is an indictment of the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense. Among its findings: "VA and DOD did not listen to sick Gulf War veterans as to possible causes of their illnesses"; "Neither the VA nor the DOD has systematically attempted to determine whether sick Gulf War veterans are any better or worse today than when they first reported symptoms"; and "treatment of sick Gulf War veterans by VA and DOD to date has largely focused on stress and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)." In addition to summary findings, interested users can survey background material, additional views and detailed finding and recommendations. [JS]

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift (1998)

http://www.jaffebros.com/lee/gulliver/about.html

The main feature of this site, a part-time project from librarian and dedicated Swift fan Lee Jaffe, is the text of the 1726 Motte edition of Gulliver's Travels with corrections from the 1735 Faulkner edition. The site features not only an authoritative, hyperlinked edition of Gulliver's Travels , but also links to additional resources, source texts, study guides, scholarly societies and just about anything that could be of use to a Swift scholar or fan. Jaffe is still in the process of hyperlinking the text to a dictionary he has compiled for the purpose, and he has also assembled a collection of quotes, a list of Swift's neologisms, illustrations from other editions, and a timeline of relevant dates. Though Jaffe demurs, "I don't pretend that this is a scholarly edition," he may be too modest. [TK]

Also part of this site are a list of radio stations that play Cajun music and a description of Arcadania, the part of Louisiana known as "Cajun Country." GuruNet (beta version) (1999)

http://www.gurunet.com/

GuruNet is a novel little application written by Guru International, Inc. that brings useful information to your desktop in an easy-to-use manner. GuruNet waits and watches for the user to hold down the "ALT" key and click on any word in any window. The program then retrieves information about that word from online sources. The information ranges from encyclopedia references to financial information, and GuruNet intelligently decides which type of information to display. GuruNet is closely linked to various Internet services and provides quick ways to search for terms using the popular search engines or even for books relating to the search term. Frustratingly, GuruNet does not seem to allow searching for phrases, but it remains an unobtrusive and useful tool. GuruNet is freely available as a beta-testing version and runs on Win95/98/NT. http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/elvis/elnix.html

One of the highlights of the recently opened National Security Archive (George Washington University) web site, is the Richard Nixon-Elvis Presley meeting section. After writing a six-page letter in which he suggested being made a "'Federal Agent-at-Large'" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs," Elvis Presley visited President Nixon on December 21, 1970. This site contains an image of the actual letter along with a transcription, and several presidential staff memoranda regarding the meeting (in .gif format). In addition, there is background on the meeting and photographs from it. The Nixon-Presley meeting is but one example of declassified documents that the Archive has acquired through the Freedom of Information Act and made available at the site. In addition, the Archive contains material on the Cuban Missile Crisis, selected White House email, and a searchable catalog of bi

Hadrosaurus foulkii: The First Dinosaur Skeleton (1997)

http://tigger.jvnc.net/~levins/dinosaur.html

This site draws on an account of the discovery of a nearly complete dinosaur skeleton in Haddonfield, New Jersey, in 1858 by hobbyist William Parker Foulke, the first ever finding of its kind. A drawing of the dinosaur and theories on its diet and habitat are here, as is contact information for the Haddonfield excavation, maps of the area, and promotional information about the city. Information may be viewed in two ways: full graphic features or partial graphics, allowing slower connections to be operable while waiting for images to display on the screen.
