A graphics collection features photographs of Little Man and Fat Boy, the Trinity tests, drawings of a nuclear warhead, and many more historic images. A glossary of terms and bibliography of papers specifically relating to the fission and fusion physics involved are included. Links to other sites related to nuclear weapons and other uses of nuclear energy are also provided--everything from Los Alamos National Laboratory to Greenpeace.

Hijinx Interface IRC Client (1996)

http://www.hijinx.com.au/interfac/interfac.htm

InterFACE is a new IRC client for Windows. Along with standard features found on most clients, real-time animation and graphic interfaces allow users to "see" the people with whom they are speaking. Not only that, but the words are actually spoken. Video cameras and microphones are not needed to use this client, however; InterFACE uses a text-to-speech engine to transfer the data. Registered users are able to "tune" the voice to a quality and type they prefer. Graphics can be chosen from the included IDkit (which allows users to "build" a body to go with their conversation) or can be a photo scanned in by the user. Both registered and unregistered versions are available; the registered version has full technical support, free upgrades, and more functional IDkit and voice selection packages.

http://hippias.evansville.edu/

Provided by Evansville University as a companion LASE (Limited Area Search Engine) to its Argos search engine ( discussed in the November 1, 1996 Scout Report ), Hippias is "a peer-reviewed search engine that provides access to philosophy-related resources on the [web]." Edited by Peter Suber of Earlham College (maintainer of one of the best known philosophy meta-pages on the Internet), Hippias searches seven major philosophy meta-sites, including Andrew Carpenter's Course Materials in Philosophy, David Chalmers' Philosophy Resources, and James Fieser's Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. The power of a LASE is that it allows concentrated searching of known quality resources, rather than general searching of all resources in a given field. [JS]

Historic American Sheet Music (1998)

http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/sheetmusic/

Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music Project (HASM) presents digital images of 3,042 pieces of sheet music from Duke's collections, published between 1850 and 1920. Highlights of the collection include "antebellum Southern music, Confederate imprints, and Civil war songs." The search capabilities at the site are sophisticated, allowing users to look for music by publisher name, composer, title, performer, and many other terms. There is online help for searching and a glossary of subject headings. Much of the sheet music is illustrated, and it is possible to search for pictures by "illustration type" (theme), allowing access to the subjects of the illustrations as well as the music itself. It is also possible to browse all the cover illustrations. HASM was originally funded by Ameritech as part of the ongoing Library of Congress/Ameritech Digital Library Competition; it will so

This report contains "decennial census data on several characteristics of the foreign-born population, including country of birth, length of residence in the United States, citizenship and age-sex distribution." Historical Maps of Paris (1995)

gopher://gutentag.cc.columbia.edu/11/fun/pictures/art-history

Upon entering this site, you'll come across three links--one for About Paris Maps, one for 1721-1750, and one for 1861-1870. Click on either of the latter two headings to enter a much larger file listing. The images are classified by sections of the city, such as "overall" and "northeast." There are at least 100 images here; most are detailed enough to make out buildings, street names, and other features. All the map details are in French, since these are images of originals or reprints. These maps illustrate changes in both map-making over time and the growth of the city, and provide an informative graphic illustration for any discussion of Paris from these eras.

For those with other interests in history, there is an index of history-related web sites, organized by category. About half of the entries in the index include a brief statement of what kind of information the user is likely to find on a particular site. As a meta-index of historical resources this should prove useful to historians interested in many eras a
