National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronomers, using the Keck II telescope in Hawaii, along with a team of scientists from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the University of Florida, Gainesville, using the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile, "have discovered what appears to be the clearest evidence yet of a budding solar system around a nearby star." HR 4796, about 220 light years from Earth, "shows a swirling disk of dust around the star" that portends the building of a star system. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory press release explains the meaning of the findings. The MIRLIN (Mid-InfraRed Large-well Imager) page contains photos, more explanations, and a link to theoretical images and explanation of how a star system forms. In 1955, the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas presented an exhibition compiled by librarian Robert Vosper on intellectual freedom and the banning of books. Demand for the exhibition catalog was so great that it was reprinted until over 20,000 copies had been distributed. This year, Alexandra Mason and Richard Clement issue this electronic edition of the catalog to "continue the travels of this exhibition and reaffirm our commitment to free enquiry." The electronic catalog is a descriptive bibliography of books banned in England, Germany, Russia, France, Spain, and the United States, and includes images. Given this range, the catalog provides good examples of printing and illustration of books from the early seventeenth century through the first half of the twentieth, along with thought-provoking commentary on book-banning. A simple, intuitive, clean, and colorful Web site, Healthtouch Online is a health research tool and directory. If you are looking for specific research or historical information on drugs, use the internal search engine. The search results yield generic drug names, common uses, side effects, cautions, and benefits. Pharmacy Search uses zipcodes entered by the user and returns information on pharmacies in that community that have Healthtouch kiosks in their stores. Healthweb (1997)
Healthweb is an ongoing project of CIC (Committee for Institutional Cooperation) schools (Big 10 schools plus University of Chicago), to "develop an interface which will provide organized access to evaluated non-commercial, health related, Internet-accessible resources." At present, over 70 subjects are in the main directory, and over 40 of these provide links to sites covering health issues from AIDS to Medical Informatics to Women's Health. This is a distributed collection in that each subject is handled by a particular CIC university. Access is by subject or by university, and what makes the site powerful is its selectivity, which distinguishes it as one of the better starting points for health and medicine related Internet sites. On September 15, Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala released "Healthy People 2010 Objectives: Draft for Public Comment," which proposes more than 500 national objectives for improving the health of Americans by the year 2010. First began in 1979, Healthy People, a national initiative to prevent disease and foster better health, is widely used as a strategic management tool by the Federal Government, States, and local communities. This latest incarnation, which succeeds Healthy People 2000, reflects recent advances in science and medicine, as well as emerging public health challenges. The working draft has been placed online specifically to promote public comment and input. Users are encouraged to submit their comments at the site or via surface mail until December 15, 1998.
