The only thing predictable about this site is that it will lead you to political goodies on the Internet. Other than that, there's no telling where you may find yourself on any particular day. The Political Site of the Day features a daily link (Monday through Friday) to entertaining, informative, and current political sites on the Net. Sites are selected based upon their quality and quantity of information, rather than upon political affiliation. For example, one day you may be led to the Christian Coalition and the next you'll find yourself at the Democratic National Committee or the Rush Limbaugh Home Page. An archive of past Political Sites of the Day can be found online, and visitors are invited to submit their own ideas for future site inclusions.

Population of the 100 Largest Cities and Other Urban Places in the United States: 1790 to 1990--US Census Bure (1998)

http://www.census.gov/population/www/documentation/twps0027.html

This paper presents decennial census population totals for the 100 largest cities and other urban places in the United States based on the 21 decennial censuses taken from 1790 to 1990. This is the first time that the populations of America's largest urban areas at each census have been published in a single report. The report begins with useful background on three central topics: Urban and Urban Place, City Populations and Annexations, and Cities and Their Suburbs. The data are offered in 26 detailed statistical tables and two text tables. Explanations of detailed tables, sources and limitations of the data, notes for individual places, and references are also provided. [MD]

http://www.census.gov/prod/3/98pubs/p23-194.pdf

On November 19, the Census Bureau released a report that combines "a wide range of sample survey and census data on demographic, social and economic trends for the nation." The report draws on a variety of recent Census Bureau reports, including the Current Population Survey, the Survey of Income and Program Participation, the Housing Vacancy Survey, and independent population estimates and projections. Contents include "sections on national and state population trends and projections; geographical mobility; school enrollment, educational attainment and post-secondary school financing; households and families; marital status and living arrangements; fertility, child care arrangements and child support; disability, program participation and health insurance; labor force and occupation; money income and poverty; race and Hispanic-origin populations; and the elderly population." Population Reference Bureau (1998)

http://www.prb.org/prb/

Population issues are central to environmental and human-rights debates, and yet because of the sensitivity of this topic it is often difficult to find objective information about population and demographics. The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) was established in 1929 to meet this need. Among the features of this Web site is an online information service for journalists, whereby PRB will answer population- or demographic-related questions within 24 hours. If you are not a journalist, a search of this site and its links to other population-related resources should resolve your queries.

PORTFOLIO: Princeton University Library, Department of Rare Books and Special Collections (1998)

http://libserv3.princeton.edu/rbsc2/portfolio/portfolio.html

As anyone who has ever looked for images to illustrate a publication knows, many of the best pictures are in smaller collections at historical societies, museums, and university libraries. Often, despite the richness of their collections, these institutions have limited numbers of staff to provide reference and access. To address this dilemma, Princeton University's Special Collections Department presents the Portfolio Website, which offers digital versions of the 452 images most frequently requested for reproduction in recent years. The images are arranged in several series for ease of browsing. Users can view thumbnails with accompanying identification and then enlarge images. Also included are fax- or mail-back forms for ordering reproductions, fee schedules, and publication permission information. [DS]

African American Perspectives is a famous pamphlet collection from the Library of Congress American Memory Collection, containing over 350 pamphlets (browsable and searchable) on all aspects of African American history from the early 19th to early 20th centuries. Pamphlets are available in text, SGML, (Standardized General Markup Language) and as .tif images. American Slave Narratives, provided by the American Studies Program at the University of Virginia, contains a small sample of WPA (Works Progress Administration) interviews with former slaves conducted between 1936 and 1938. The small selections from twelve interviews are interesting in that the WPA interviewers tried to transcribe the subjects' dialect as they heard it.
