The Alternative Colleges Network (1996)

http://hampshire.edu/~gip/ACN.html

For those who wish to explore colleges outside of the mainstream, The Alternative Colleges Network is a site containing links to universities and schools that entertain different perspectives, political views, and philosophical bents. Although most of the sites on the lists are schools that some might consider liberal, an effort seems to have been made to balance the entries. For people who prefer to get their information via e-mail, there is an option to join a discussion list along with an archive of some of the more popular topics in alternative education.

The American Heritage 40 (1998)

http://www.americanheritage.com/98/oct/40index.htm

How does Bill Gates compare to Henry Ford or the robber barons Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller? These "men of independent means" and their 36 companions are listed in the American Heritage 40, a ranking of the 40 wealthiest Americans of all time. The rankings were made by estimating the size of each fortune at the time of death, or in the current year for the three living members on the list, and then comparing it with the gross national product of the time. Bill Gates may be the richest man in the world, but he still has a long way to go to match Rockefeller's staggering 1/66 of the entire nation's GNP at the time of his death. The listing for each of the 40 includes a photo, estimated worth in today's value, and brief biographical information. The site also offers an explanation of the ranking process and an interesting essay comparing and contrasting the men and their varied p

http://www.fas.org/asmp/library/handbook/cover.html

This new handbook, written by Lora Lumpe and Jeff Donarkski and published by the Federation of American Scientists Arms Sales Monitoring Project, examines the role of the United States in the global arms trade. According to the authors, the US accounted for more than half of all weapons exports in the 1990s; the majority of these weapons went to governments considered to be non-democratic or repressive. The Basics (1996)

http://www.resource.net/basics.html

Here is a solid, descriptive introduction to the Internet for potential business users. The Basics is not a tutorial, but instead a very readable, 10-page manual that will give you a good sense of what the Net and the World Wide Web are all about, as well as what they might be able to do for your business. Topics include: Internet basics; World Wide Web basics; Web marketing basics; and site development resources and tools. The language is simple and jargon-free, the information impeccable. For a brief but high-quality overview of the Internet and its basic opportunities, there are few sites that match this one.

The Bed & Breakfast Channel (1998)

http://www.bbchannel.com/

With this site, founders Eric and Liz Goldreyer provide travelers with "comprehensive, user-friendly, up-to-date information on bed and breakfasts and inns" via the Internet. The primary focus is on providing access to bed and breakfast listings in North America (over 20,000), although there is also a growing collection of listings from around the world. In the Quick Search, users may search for accommodations by city, state or country. Users who don't have a specific destination in mind, can browse geographically with the World Search. http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/bsuva/

Maintained by the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia Library, this site contains three electronic text resources of interest to scholars and educators. The first and most important of these is a recently released collection of the first 49 volumes (1948-96) of the Society's Studies in Bibliography, "a virtual encyclopedia of scholarly work on the history of books and editing over the past 50 years." The volumes are offered individually and as a full-text searchable database. The second resource, Shakespearean Prompt-Books, is an eight-volume collection of studies of the stage texts used in various seventeenth-century performances of Shakespeare's plays; the plays are also available individually or as a searchable database. The third resource, Attributions of Authorship in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1731-1868, is a searchable database containing well over 5,000 attributio

The BigHub.com (1999)

http://www.thebighub.com/

This site joins an already crowded field of portal/ multiple search engine sites. Like some of its peers, BigHub allows simultaneous searches of numerous engines, in this case nine, and includes several value-added features, such as stock quotes, news, weather reports, and free email. Unlike some of its competitors, BigHub also features a nice collection of specialty search engines in categories such as Arts & Humanities, Education, Government, News, and Science, among others. Search engines in each category are further organized by discipline. Although any such collection is inevitably subjective, users may find the site a useful tool to reduce their search time and gather more relevant results. [MD]

The Biology Place (1996)

http://www.biology.com/

If you are interested in what the future of educational resources on the Internet may look like, visit the Biology Place. This resource for teachers in the biological sciences will have a "grand opening" on August 19th, but is available now for previewing. For four weeks after the site's opening, all resources will be free of charge; then each teacher (along with up to 250 of his/her students) will be charged a fee for an academic-year registration (site licenses are available). Nine high school and college faculty members are responsible for content areas: chemistry, cells, genetics, evolution, diversity, plants, animals, and ecology. Although only the genetics section is fully active during the prototype stage, each section will contain student activities, selected web resources, and research news. Instructors will also find teachers' forums and curriculum materials.

The Biology Project--University of Arizona (1997)

http://www.biology.arizona.edu/

Faculty and staff at the University of Arizona have developed an "interactive online resource for learning biology" based on an entry-level biology course, for use by high school and college-level students. The site is divided into seven subject areas: biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, human biology, Mendelian genetics, immunology, and molecular biology. Within each subject there are problem sets, tutorials, activities, and links to related Internet resources. This well-designed site can be used in combination with classroom or laboratory course work, or as a self-guided study program. The Biology Project is funded by a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The Guided Tour requires JavaScript. [AG]

http://www2.ari.net/foley/

The Biotech Law home page offers legal and scientific information of interest to researchers in biotechnology/pharmaceutical science. At this time, the site provides basic articles on methods of record keeping for inventors, an explanation of the U.S. legal standard for inventorship and an overview of patent application preparation. The Biotech law home page also includes more advanced articles on intellectual property licensing, parallel importing of patented products, and the effects of electronic publication on U.S. Patent rights. In addition to a "heads up" guide to recently-issued U.S. biotech patents, the home page provides links to additional sources of information on intellectual property protection, as well as links to selected scientific resources on Internet.

The Black Collegian Online (1997)

http://www.black-collegian.com/african/index-history.shtml

This site, the online presence for a 26-year-old print "national career opportunities magazine," celebrates Black History month by presenting eleven articles on African and African American history. Included are articles on African American trailblazers in several fields, African science before the birth of the "New World," two articles each on Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., an article on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and, perhaps most interesting (as well as controversial), an article by John Henricke Clarke entitled "Why Africana History?" The articles present a refreshingly Afrocentric view of African American history. [JS]
