The Discovery of the Electron--AIP (1997)

http://www.iop.org/Physics/Electron/Exhibition/

To celebrate J.J. Thomson's discovery of the electron in 1897, the Institute of Physics (in collaboration with the Science Museum, London) and the American Institute of Physics ( discussed in the February 7, 1997 Scout Report ) offer online centennial exhibits. The IOP-Science Museum site offers sections on What is an Electron, Seeing with Electrons, and Electrons in our Lives. However, it is highlighted by Discovery, 1897, which contains a QuickTime account of the discovery, a Shockwave animation of it, and an archive recording of the great man himself discussing the discovery. The AIP site concentrates more on the discovery process itself, tracing it back to the 1850s, recounting the 1897 experiments, the response to them, and their ultimate legacy. [JS]

The Dominion: The Sci-Fi Channel (1997)

http://www.scifi.com/set/

The Sci-Fi Channel has recently added RealAudio (3.0 or later) renderings of original, classic, and adapted science fiction stories. New stories are offered biweekly, weekly, and monthly, respectively. At present the "original" section contains Into the Sun, performed by Mark Hamill, "classics" contains the 1950 broadcast of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles, and "adaptations" contains Kafka's The Country Doctor . The site promises "synchroniz[ation of] text, illustrations, photos, and animations with the on-going streaming audio." However, the audio alone is more than effective for those with slower connections. The Dominion web site also contains Sci-Fi Channel program listings and other information of interest to science fiction fans. [JS]

The Drawings of Annibale Carracci - NGA (1999)

http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/car_toc.htm

The National Gallery of Art has created this online feature to accompany its new exhibition of the drawings of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609). Prefaced by a lengthy introductory essay by Diane De Grazia, the exhibition catalogue contains ten sketches dating from 1582 to 1606. Each image page contains a thumbnail of the sketch, a few paragraphs of explanatory text, notes, provenance, bibliographic references, and in some cases, additional related images. A bibliography of some 300 related scholarly sources is also provided. [ATW]

The Drawn Sword: engravings and woodcuts from the MacBean Stuart and Jacobite Collection (1999)

http://george.qmlib.abdn.ac.uk/macbean.html

Created and maintained by the University of Aberdeen Historic Collections, this site offers access to images of 1,278 loose engravings and woodcuts that form part of the MacBean Stuart and Jacobite Collection. In addition to the images, the collection contains approximately 3,500 books and 1,000 pamphlets which "cover every aspect of the Jacobite rebellions, the causes and effects, and the personalities, royal, national and local." Users have two options for retrieving images: a keyword search or simple browse. Since the latter is simply a list of captions for all 1278 images and is not divided into any categories, users will probably find the keyword search more efficient. Each image is accompanied by a caption "detailing the subject and where known the artist, engraver and printer." [MD]

The Durkheim Pages (1997)

http://www.pscw.uva.nl/sociosite/TOPICS/Sociologists.html

At the heart of this resource on the French sociologist and philosopher Emile Durkheim, provided by Professor Robert Alun Jones of the University of Illinois, is its bibliographic section. Included are both a complete chronological bibliography of Durkheim's published works, and an alphabetical bibliography of hundreds of items about Durkheim. An explanation of the process involved in producing these bibliographies is provided at the site. This site also features two full texts (French only at this time), highlighted by a set of lecture notes taken by the philosopher Andre Lalonde from a course given by Durkheim in 1883-84. A brief biography of Durkheim, a timeline, a list of lecture courses taught by Durkheim, and a glossary of pertinent terms are available. Much content at the site is informed by Steven Lukes' Durkheim: His Life and Work: A Historical and Critical Study . [JS]

The Economic and Social Impacts of Electronic Commerce: Preliminary Findings and Research Agenda [.pdf] (1999)

http://www.oecd.org/subject/e_commerce/summary.htm

Electronic Commerce has been in existence for little more than three years, but due to its enormous capacity to affect "economic activities and social environments," it has already had a huge impact on retail, finance, and communications, representing 30 percent of GDP. This 156-page report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development examines the past and potential impact that e-commerce promises to have on business and the economy. The report is broken into five chapters, which need to be downloaded separately, including "Growth of electronic commerce: present and potential," "Electronic commerce, jobs and skills," and "Societal implications of electronic commerce," each with its own set of charts and graphs. A report summary is also included. [EM]

The End of Life: Exploring Death in America--NPR [RealPlayer] (1998)

http://www.npr.org/programs/death/

Viewing the black and erie homepage of this website entitled Death in America might encourage one to shudder and quickly avoid it. But click on! This site, provided by National Public Radio, covers a number of very real issues surrounding the experiences of death and dying in America. It is highlighted by RealAudio and text transcripts of various "All Things Considered" segments on this topic that have aired since November, 1997. Another section provides testimonals by the dying (or by family members and friends who are faced with loss), and two others serve as bibliographic resources for people with terminal illnesses and for people coping with grief. A feedback section allows users to add their own death story to the page. [LXP]

The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition (1999)

http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/shackleton/index.html

This new online exhibit from the American Museum of Natural History documents Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 voyage to the Antarctic, one of the greatest expedition tales ever told. In January 1915, one day's sail from their destination, the expedition's ship Endurance became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed. After camping on the ice for five months, Shackleton and five sailors made a daring 800-mile open boat journey, crossed the mountains of South Georgia island, and eventually reached a remote whaling station, where he organized a rescue mission and saved all of the men left behind. With short text segments, diary excerpts, maps, and wonderful photos from expedition photographer Frank Hurley, the exhibit traces this remarkable story. Information on the physical exhibit and related special programs are also provided. [MD]

http://envirolink.org/about.html

Call it a computer network. Or call it a grassroots community. You'll be correct in both cases when it comes to the EnviroLink Network. This nonprofit organization has grown from a mailing list of 20 student activists to become an online clearinghouse of environmental information. From its Web site, you'll be able to study environmental issues such as alternative farming systems, smog watches, biodiversity, toxic substances, nuclear power, ozone depletion, water pollution, and more. You'll also be able to explore a host of EnviroLink projects, browse a calendar of upcoming environmental and activist events, check out the environmental e-mail list archives, and connect to the Internet Green Marketplace. Don't miss the Pointers of the Week link, which will lead you to some of the week's most interesting environmental hot spots on the Net.

The Estate Project, founded in 1991, offers artists with AIDS advice on how to plan for the future of their art. Initially, the Estate Project funded various groups' efforts to compile slide archives documenting the work of artists with AIDS. To provide greater access to these images, the Estate Project turned to digital technology. Their Website, which debuted on December 1st, World AIDS Day, now features the Virtual Collection--over 3,000 images of artwork made by about 150 living and dead artists who have or had AIDS. In addition to high resolution images of the artwork, the Virtual Collection provides brief biographies of the artists and contact information. Currently, you will need Internet Explorer 4.01 (free download available) to view the Virtual Collection, since it utilizes software from Luna Imaging called Browser Insight, which is not compatible with Netscape. The Evolution of Languages [RealPlayer] (1999)

http://www.exploratorium.edu/exploring/

Another great site from Exploratorium (described in the February 21, 1997 Scout Report ) The Evolution of Language provides users with tools to trace and explore the evolution of the spoken and written word. Enhanced by audio interviews with linguist Merritt Ruhlen, author of The Origin of Language: Tracing the Evolution of the Mother Tongue, this simple but well crafted site provides a nice jumping off point for those interested in the subject. Several exercises and tables help users explore how linguists trace word use and creation as well as how they group languages into common families. Also included is basic information about the history of linguistics and the roots of language classification. [REB]

The Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia (1998)

http://wwwusr.obspm.fr/planets/

Jean Schneider, of the Observatoire de Paris, put together this no-nonsense site featuring current information on the "detection and study of extrasolar planets, including exobiology." Schneider's commitment to the subject is clear with the inclusion of detailed scientific and technical articles, a tutorial (by Arizona State University) on the detection of extrasolar planets, and a hyperlinked bibliography of some 200 scientific journal articles, books, and reports. A catalog of extrasolar planets (with links to the scientific articles describing them) features dozens of confirmed planets (or brown dwarfs) around main sequence stars or pulsars, in addition to disks and unconfirmed objects. Whether you are a dedicated amateur or pro (and read English or French), these pages are clearly designed and well worth the orbit. [LXP]

The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit (1998)

http://www.bhere.com/ruins/

Created by Lowell Boileau, this site documents what some feel is the "American Athens": postindustrial Detroit. In the first two decades of this century, Henry Ford and his contemporaries spurred a massive industrial expansion in the city. Now, at the end of the century, many of these huge factory and office buildings lie silent, abandoned, and slowly decaying. Boileau's site offers a number of thematic tours (Detroit's Gilded Age, Industrial Ruins, Downtown Ruins, Neighborhood Ruins) with many photos. Users can take the Express Tour through the highlights as well as select from a number of detailed Side Tours. Those motivated to see Detroit's ruins in person (not "virtually") will appreciate the clickable map pinpointing locations listed at the site. Additional features include an Interaction Zone, a What's New Section, and a gallery of urban paintings by the author. [MD]

The Feather Trade and the American Conservation Movement -- NMAH (1999)

http://www.si.edu/nmah/ve/feather/ftintro.htm

This new virtual exhibit from the National Museum of American History focuses on the odd origins of the Audubon society and other early conservation movements: nineteenth-century America's rage for plumage to adorn women's hats. Divided into three sections -- Feather Adornment, Hunting and Collecting, and Audubon Movement -- this exhibit begins by illustrating the use of feathers, and indeed whole birds, as fashion accessories in a period fascinated with the natural world. The excessive hunting practices which fed this fashion and the subsequent devastation of populations of native birds such as the egret led concerned "socialites" to found the Audubon society. The exhibit is brief but studded with numerous interesting thumbnails, from a 1903 advertisement urging consumers to "buy direct" from an ostrich farm to a letter from Teddy Roosevelt praising "the substitution of the camera for t
