The Flowering Plant Gateway (1998)

http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/FLORA/newgate/gateopen.htm

Biological classification systems provide a structural framework through which scientists explore patterns of affinity and phyletic relationships. In an attempt to anchor the "growing mass of Internet data" on flowering plant families to stable taxonomic structures, Texas A&M University Bioinformatics Working Group has created this excellent resource, offering detailed information within the construct of several well-known plant classification systems. Currently-listed classification systems include Cronquist, Takhtajan, and Thorne. Internet information for each family varies but covers a wide variety of topics--for example, several fu

The Future of Networking Technologies for Learning (1996)

http://www.ed.gov/Technology/Futures/

In 1995 the US Department of Education commissioned a series of white papers on various issues related to networking technologies for education. Those fourteen papers are now on the web, along with the proceedings of the conference of authors in November 1995. The papers address such topics as the funding of information infrastructure, the role of personal digital assistants (PDAs) in the classroom, and virtual educational communities, as well the concomitant curriculum reform that these advances will require. The papers make use of hypertext links to provide immediate access to data, other reports, relevant legislation, and related web resources. Abstracts of the papers are available, as well as information about the authors. Visitors to the site can leave feedback through a web form, and can read the feedback left by others.

The G-Files: Spiro Agnew [.pdf] (1999)

http://www.apbnews.com/media/gfiles/agnew/index.html

The latest in APB Online's G-Files Reports, a collection of declassified files from the FBI and other government agencies (discussed in the December 11, 1998 Scout Report ), these never-before-published FBI files on Spiro Agnew "provide new insights on the events" that led to the Vice-President's resignation during a bribery scandal in 1973. In addition to reports alleging cash payoffs within the White House, the files also contain some details on Agnew's "involvement in graft during his years as a Maryland state official." The site offers an overview of Agnew's career, the scandal, and the aftermath, as well as .gif or .pdf images of 200 pages of files. In this case, the .gif images are strongly recommended due to downloading and legibility problems experienced with the .pdf version. [MD]

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum was recently opened at Texas A&M University. The site is similar to many other US presidential library sites in that it describes its subject (and his wife), provides information about the museum, and features a photo gallery. What distinguishes this site from other presidential library sites is the availability of hundreds of searchable and browsable presidential papers, organized chronologically at this time. Transcripts of press conferences and State of the Union Addresses are available. By providing this glimpse into a presidency, the Bush Library site becomes a model that other Presidential sites would do well to emulate. [JS]

The goal of the Global SchoolNet Foundation (1995)

http://www.gsn.org/kid/sa/index.html

The goal of the Global SchoolNet Foundation is to identify students from around the world and work with them to refine the concept of "Student Ambassadors." A Student Ambassador is one who positively supports the concept of building the "Global Schoolhouse." Duties would include: discovering and describing the ways the Internet can improve the learning environment; assisting other students, teachers, parents and your community in learning about the Internet; demonstrating positive global "netiquette" by learning about and respecting the cultures of people around the world; demonstrate the collaboration and "team building" potential of using technology; and sharing your experiences with the news media and the public. For more information about the duties and benefits of becoming a Student Ambassador visit the GSH Web page.

The Great Chicago Fire and the Web of Memory (1996)

http://www.chicagohs.org/fire/index.html

It was 9 o'clock on a Sunday evening 125 years ago that, the story goes, Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked off the most memorable fire in US history. This new site, a collaborative effort of the Chicago Historical Society and Northwestern University, provides images, essays, and interactive panoramas of the city both before and after the conflagration. The "Web of Memory" pages cover the fire from a different angle, presenting eyewitness accounts, media coverage, and the factual evidence behind the charge that the bovine was to blame. Users will also find selected bibliographies corresponding to every topic (click on "library"). There is a technical support page that guides users through the (sometimes high) browser and plug-in requirements for viewing all of the aspects of this site (even uber-users may not have 3D glasses at hand for viewing the vintage stereographs).

The Great Movies--Roger Ebert (1998)

http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/old_movies/old_movies.html

Roger Ebert, well known Chicago Sun Times and syndicated television film reviewer, admits "movie history did not begin in 1967, but my career as a movie critic did." A prolific reviewer of new movies (discussed in the May 3, 1996 Scout Report ), he has now made available a growing collection of reviews of classic movies. At present there are 37 reviews available, covering various genres and time periods. Included are Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, The Passion of Joan of Arc, M, Written On the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and Ikiru, among others. All reviewed films are available on home video. This is a biweekly feature, and for those who love classic movies, there is no better place to enjoy a guided tour by a kindred soul. [JS]

The Great War: 80 Years On--BBC [RealPlayer] (1998)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/special_report/1998/10/98/world_war_i/newsid_197000/197437.stm

November 11 marks the 80th anniversary of the armistice that ended "the war to end all wars," a conflict which took as many as ten million lives, wiped out a generation of young men in Europe, and helped to spark a revolution in Russia. This new site from the BBC commemorates the war and offers users a number of interesting resources. Multimedia offerings include a ten-minute video collage of photos and newsreel footage produced by the Imperial War Museum and a selection of fascinating and poignant audio interviews of veterans, including one man who was just fourteen when he left to fight in France. The site also contains a selection of soldiers' letters home, overviews of four major battles (Gallipoli, Verdun, the Somme, and Passchendaele), and a number of topical articles. [MD]

The Greatest Films (1997)

http://www.filmsite.org/

Timothy Dirks, Manager of Public Programs at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, also wears another hat, that of dedicated amateur film buff. This site is the result of that hobby, and it is one of the better amateur sites on its topic. At the heart of the site is a list of the author's choice for 100 greatest films of all time (English language films only). Each of these films is reviewed in depth. An introductory section explains criteria. A second list of the 100 runner-ups (more briefly annotated) is also provided, as well as sections on greatest film quotes and scenes, an essay on genres, and a beautiful collection of hundreds of film posters from Adam's Rib to You Can't Take it With You. While you may not agree with Mr. Dirks' picks, that is half the fun of a site like this. Note that the popularity of the site curtails access at times. [JS]

The Guide to Real Estate on the Internet (1998)

http://www.ireg.com/guide/

If you are looking for a new house, or are preparing to relocate, a good first stop might be the Guide to Real Estate on the Internet. It's not much to look at, but that doesn't matter this site is all about links. Select a state or country and you'll find a list of links to real-estate professionals and property listings in that area. Most of the listings include good descriptions and color photographs, and often the agency pages include financial information as well. The biggest drawback is that the property locations are unevenly dispersed they seem to be concentrated in populous areas, such as California, Washington, and New York states, and countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. However, this site adds new links regularly, so it's worth your time to check it out.

The Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML) (1997)

http://www.phone.com/products/upsdk.html

The Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML), a product of Unwired Planet, Inc., is a relatively new language that allows web content to be displayed and accessed on handheld devices such as mobile phones and pagers. A proposal for a Handheld Device Markup Language was submitted to the World Wide Consortium (W3C) on May 7, 1997. It may seem strange that it is possible to view web documents on the tiny display screen provided and navigate with a limited number of keys, but it is. Briefly, HDML provides a special navigational model that does not rely on visual context, as HTML does. The Unwired Planet HDML page contains detailed information as well as a link to the proposal.
