The National Education Goals Report, 1999 [.pdf, 709K] (1999)

http://www.negp.gov/

In September 1989, President George Bush met with the nation's governors in the first National Education Summit. In the wake of the summit, six National Education Goals (later expanded to eight by Congress) for the year 2000 were adopted. Released last week, the 1999 National Education Goals Report reveals that these goals will not be met, but the report does indicate that many states have made steady improvement on the 34 state indicators that measure progress toward the goals. Users can read the full text of the report in .pdf format at the National Education Goals Panel (NEGP) site. Users can also see how their state rated via fact sheets and score cards, the former in HTML format and the latter in .pdf. In addition, the NEGP site offers weekly and monthly newsletters available at the site or through free email subscription. [MD]

The New Northern Ireland Assembly (1999)

http://www.ireland.com/special/peace/

Intense discussions continue in 10 Downing Street and Belfast, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair pressing all the parties in Northern Ireland, so far without success, to maintain momentum in the peace process by setting up an executive as outlined by the Good Friday Agreement signed last year. Current plans propose devolving power to some type of executive body by June 30. However, Ulster Unionists, led by David Trimble, who will serve as First Minister of the new Northern Ireland Assembly, have so far rejected forming an executive which contains two reserved seats for Sinn Fein, commonly regarded as the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), without some tangible start to paramilitary decommissioning. Sinn Fein, led by Gerry Adams, has consistently pointed out that the text of the Good Friday Agreement states that paramilitary decommissioning must be complete two years

Whether you're brand new to the Web or have already surfed a bit, this site will bring you to introductory resources you probably haven't seen yet. You have a choice of guides in several areas: sports, music, and the Internet itself. Each is a gateway to a wealth of links. For example, the Internet guide offers introductory documents on most aspects of the Net (URL, FTP, Unix, e-mail, etc.) and also to a survey of Internet tools (Internet Tour) at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. There are specific sections for users of all kinds of platforms, FAQs both serious and humorous, and hypermedia tours. The sports guide will take you to the home pages of your favorite event, banks of statistics, schedules, and much more. The music guide is even more extensive. The site administrator has plans to expand his guides to include law, medicine, physics, engineering, math, writing, chemistry, and art. Look for this to become one of the more popular and useful sites on the Web.

The newest learning exhibit from the Annenberg/CPB Project (1998)

http://www.learner.org/exhibits/personality/

The newest learning exhibit from the Annenberg/CPB Project explores how we create and define our internal identities and external personas. The way in which we see others and they see us is fundamental to all social interaction and relationships, and the personas we project and interpret are naturally complex. To explore personality, this site offers sections on Reputation, Behavior, Thoughts and Feelings, the Unconscious, Genes and Society, and Human Nature. There are a number of hand-on activities, including a personality test and a section that allows users to create a story about a picture and analyze their interpretations. The site also features numerous links to other sites on psychology and personality. [MD]

The Objectivism WWW Service (1994)

http://www.vix.com/pub/objectivism/essays.html

Objectivism is a philosophy originated by Ayn Rand, as presented in her works The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, and many others. Its basic tenets are: in metaphysics -- an objective reality existing independent of man's mind; in epistemology -- reason as man's means of obtaining knowledge; in ethics -- egoism; and in politics -- capitalism. The Objectivism WWW Service provides information on the philosophy and pointers to resources both on and off the net.

The Official #Beatles Home Page (1997)

http://clam.rutgers.edu/~stevep/beatles.html

This site is the official WWW home base for the Internet Chat Service (IRC) channel dedicated to the Beatles. At this site, you can find information on and participate in the IRC channel, check out the latest scoops on the Beatles, and purchase rare CDs, tapes, and other items. You can also access the track listings for both anthologies (I and II), as well as download related audio files of everything from interview clips, demos, and songs. There are also, of course, links to a variety of other Beatles resources on the Internet. One of the features that we like best, though, is the section with information on #Beatles regulars. These can include pictures, names, background information, and whatever other tidbits these people wish to have available. In a world where information about the folks you're conversing with is usually limited to scrolling text on a screen, this is a nice step towards filling in the blanks.

The databases for each state enable researchers to conduct sophisticated cross-field queries to trace the initial transfer of land titles from the Federal government to individuals. Historians may conduct genealogical searches to associate an individual with a particular location during a specific time. The site allows users to order certified copies of land patents at a nominal cost. Note: electronic images for land patent records are viewable as TIF files only. [AO]
