The Oxford Book of English Verse (1996)

http://www.bartleby.com/141/101/index.html

The Bartleby Library at Columbia University has added the 1919 edition of The Oxford Book of English Verse to its online offerings. The entire text of the 1084-page original, edited by Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, is available and searchable. The collection may be browsed using alphabetic indices of authors, titles, or first lines. A chronological index of authors, from a 13th-century Anonymous to R. D. Blackmore (1825-1900) is also available. This site won't give you the cutting edge in English verse, but it is an interesting look at what was considered classic literature in the early twentieth century (as one would expect, plenty of Shakespeare and few pieces by women) as well as a valuable resource for seeking out bits of timeless verse.

The well known Berkeley Digital Library SunSite, discussed in the February 9, 1996 Scout Report , has recently added two new resources to its collection. California Heritage Digital Image Access Project is "a 'digital' archive containing photographs, pictures, and manuscripts from the collections of the Bancroft Library." The site is unique in that it "embed[s] digital representations of the primary sources directly within the documents--archival finding aids--created by the Bancroft Library's curators and archivists to describe the collections of which they are part." At present there are 39 finding aids linked to over 3,300 images, which are available for viewing in 3 resolutions. The browsable and searchable finding aids include "1934 International Longshoremen's Association and General Strike," "California Mission Sketches by Henry Miller, 1856," and "San Francisco Earthquake and Fir

The People's Republic at 50: Special report -- BBC [RealPlayer] (1999)

http://www.china-embassy.org/Press/50years.htm

China's annual National Day parade took special significance today, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). While the streets were swept clear of any potential undesirables and Beijing's residents were told to stay home and watch the proceedings on television, over half a million specially selected people participated in a huge, choreographed celebration of Communist rule. Highlights included a five-mile military parade punctuated with fly-overs by fighter jets and over 90 floats depicting the heroism and progress of the Chinese people. In addition to their sheer size and pomp, the celebrations were notable for a number of aspects. Some saw the massive military display as a warning to Taiwan that China may resort to force to reclaim what it sees as a renegade province. Also of interest was the positioning of President Jiang Zemin, who delivered his s

The Place (1996)

http://gertrude.art.uiuc.edu/ludgate/the/place/place2.html

A virtual gallery of sorts, The Place is an "evolving repository of artwork created specifically for distribution on the Web." Some of the images on this site tend to be eerie and haunting, associated with a similarly dark and sullen genre of poetry. However, the marriage of the two creates a unique Web site interface that is at the cutting-edge of multimedia. Life With Father is a heartfelt poem strung together with links of digital photographs; The Urban Diary, on the other hand, links enigmatic images of an anonymous diary. As so often in art, beauty here is in the eye of the beholder.

The Plant Engineer E~Zine, an electronic magazine for engineers in industrial manufacturing, has had a major facelift and several new features added. The new interface is intended to be more "engineery" and less computer jockish. The buttons resemble start buttons on a large piece of industrial equipment. This month's fun feature is a collection of office art from the walls of industrial offices. You know, those crazy cartoon, sayings, etc. Yup, I scanned a bunch of 'em and put them on the web. There's also a contest to send me the best office art, so send in your favorite. If you win, you will get all the praise and honor you deserve. The Plateau: The Official Website of Dr. Zahi Hawass (1999)

http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/archives/1999/990617.me.html

Originally discovered in 1993 after a donkey stumbled into it, a mummy cemetery in the town of Bawiti in Bahariya oasis, 250 miles southwest of Cairo, has begun to show promise of being the largest find of its kind ever. Zahi Hawass, head of the archaeological team, has estimated that they may find up to 10,000 mummies in the tombs. Last week, the team found over 100 mummies of high-ranking Roman Egyptians, many wearing gold masks, at the site. Some specimens have been removed to a nearby museum, while the more fragile mummies have been left in place with plans to encase them in glass. The necropolis is still closed to the public, but officials soon hope to open portions of the site as the first open-air mummy museum. On the June 17 edition of National Public Radio's (NPR) Morning Edition, host Bob Edwards talked with Zahi Hawass, who is also the Undersecretary of the State for the Giza

The Poetry Archives (1999)

http://www.emule.com/poetry/

Provided by eMule.com and maintained by three University of Georgia students, this free "classical" poetry archive will find ready use in literature classrooms. Currently containing over 3,600 non-copyrighted poems by 137 poets, the archive is browseable by author name or searchable by keyword. Search results also display the first line of each poem returned. Users may wonder at the omission of certain poems and poets (left out perhaps because of copyright issues), but on the whole, the site offers plenty to please teachers, students, and poetry lovers. Additional features include a random poem option, a fairly active discussion board, and a FAQ. [MD]

The Poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar [RealPlayer] (1998)

http://www.udayton.edu/~dunbar/

Maintained by the Black Alumni Chronicle of the University of Dayton (Ohio), this site celebrates the work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first African-American to gain national eminence as a poet. Although he died at age 33, Dunbar ultimately produced twelve books of poetry, four books of short stories, a play, and five novels, and his work was recognized in literary circles in both America and Britain. The highlight of the site is a collection of seven Dunbar poems read by Herbert Woodward Martin, a University of Dayton professor emeritus who studies and performs Dunbar's work. Other features at the site include a biography of Dunbar, several articles on Martin's performance as Dunbar, and a collection of related links. [MD]

Paul Ehrlich and the Population Bomb: The human population is likely to double by the middle of the 21st century, soaring past an estimated 10 billion people on the planet. The new PBS television documentary and companion Web site, Paul Ehrlich and The Population Bomb (broadcast premiere: April 26), looks at the ideas of one scientist whose theories link overpopulation to a broad range of global problems. The Internet content includes: current statistics about the world's dwindling natural resources; a directory of organizations committed to improving conditions resulting from overpopulation; teacher resources and a classroom "word game"; a glossary of key terms and a reading list; a population timeline dating from 10,000 BC to the 1994 World Population conference in Cairo; and background information about Paul Ehrlich and the producers.

The Power 25 -- The Influence Merchants -- Fortune (1998)

http://library.northernlight.com/SG19990714120012307.html

The December 7 issue of Fortune Magazine features the second annual Power 25 survey, self-described as "America's most reliable guide to the high-contact sports of lobbying and legislating in the nation's capital. It tells the rest of us what Washington insiders already know: who are the true masters and who the mere pretenders." For the Power 25 Survey, Fortune interviewed over 2,500 Washington political operators to determine the 25 most influential trade associations, labor unions, and other pressure groups. While many of the top lobbying groups have kept their stars in the firmament, there have been some dramatic ascents and declines. These are discussed in the full text of the article, which is provided at the site. As the list and article reveal, older images of back room dealing and cigar-smoking fat cats no longer fit today's lobbying lords. Instead of wining and dining politicia

http://primarysources.msu.edu/

The Primary Sources Network is a collaborative project by a group of Michigan school districts, museums, universities, and corporations, funded by a U.S. Department of Education Technology Innovation Challenge Grant. The goal of the project is to improve student learning by using technology to integrate primary sources into classroom curricula. Directed at educators, the site provides sample curriculum units and a gallery of artifacts from the Henry Ford Museum, one of the project partners. Links to other collections of primary sources, such as Library of Congress American Memory and the National Archives Information Locator (NAIL, discussed in the February 2, 1996 Scout Report ), together with good definitions of the terms "primary sources" and "material culture," make this site a useful starting place for educators who want to bring more primary sources into the classroom. The Princess and the Press--PBS Frontline Online (1997)

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/royals/

After the tragic death of Princess Diana recently, there was much controversy over the role of the press as an intrusive force that helped lead to her demise. PBS Frontline, in a companion site to a recent TV documentary on the relationship between the English press and monarchy, examines this controversy in detail. Interviews with thirteen journalists, including Andrew Morton, who wrote a controversial biography of the late Princess; a transcript of Diana's Interview with the BBC in 1995; selected tabloid pictures and headlines; and a timeline illustrating British royalty encounters with the press are featured. A transcript of the show will be available shortly. As always, Frontline tackles controversial issues, and while some users may not agree with the tone or conclusions of the show (and site), there is a gold mine of information on the topic here. [JS]

John Lye, a professor in the Departments of English and Communication Studies at Brock University (Canada), offers these two resources designed for beginning literature students. Critical Guide contains sections on poetry, fiction, prose in fiction, and writing analytical essays. The Problem of Meaning discusses the meaning of literature from the point of view of the author, the text, and the reader. Though not exhaustive, these guides form a useful framework to help beginning students think critically about the literature they are reading. [JS]

The Psychedelic 60's: Literary Tradition and Social Change--UVA SCD (1998)

http://www.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/sixties/index.html

In this exhibition, the Special Collections Department at the University of Virginia uses books and posters to attempt to answer the following questions: Were the Sixties the best of times or the worst of times? Did America evolve as a nation and we evolve as individuals? Are we better for the experience? The exhibition begins by hypothesizing that many of the radical ideas of the sixties can be found in the literature of 19th-century social movements. Other precursors to sixties thought, such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and the Beats of the 1950s, are then given center-stage. Finally, visitors arrive at the sixties with sections devoted to Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, Woodstock, Rock Music, Hippies, the Civil Rights Movement and more. The exhibition, which is really an annotated bibliography in disguise, does not actually answer the questions it poses, but instead presents a

The Public Records of 1968 -- PRO [.gif] (1999)

http://www.pro.gov.uk/releases/nyo99/default.htm

On January 1, the Public Record Office (PRO) released UK Government Records from 1968 that had been sealed under the 30 year rule. Some of the most interesting of these were featured on Leviathan, a topical history program on BBC2. The PRO site provides general descriptions of the record series augmented by the releases, a list of the highlights of this release, and information on accessing the records at the PRO office in Kew. The highlight of the site, however, is the collection of .gif images of the original documents quoted in the Leviathan program. These are offered in thumbnails with brief commentary and include such diverse topics as a list of UK Nuclear targets in 1968, the Prague Spring, race relations and immigration, cigarette advertising, and the public row over Prime Minister Harold Wilson's purchase of a color television set. Although this latest release will be noticed mos

The Quadrennial Defense Review (1997)

http://www.defenselink.mil/topstory/quad.html

On May 19, 1997, as mandated by the National Defense Authorization Act of 1996, US Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen presented the Quadrennial Defense Review to Congress. This site contains the May 19 Defense Department news release and briefing (along with slides), the text of the report, and the legislation mandating it. The report is composed of ten sections ranging from "The Global Security Environment" to "Force Readiness" to "Achieving a 21st Century Defense Infrastructure." However, its thrust can be ascertained from a single statement by the Secretary: "The strategy devised through the QDR can be summed up in three words: shape, respond, and prepare." [JS]

The Red Hot Jazz Archive [Frames, RealAudio] (1997)

http://www.redhotjazz.com/

In the past, the Scout Report has devoted annotations to jazz history, including Dan Morgenstern's History of Jazz ( discussed in the November 1, 1996 Scout Report ) and Klub Kaycee ( discussed in the August 30, 1996 Scout Report ). These sites are text-based, with some multimedia. The Red Hot Jazz Archive, provided by Scott Alexander, contains not only hyperlinked biographies, discographies and photos of over sixty early jazz artists and ninety bands, but also selections of their music in RealAudio format. And it is the music that adds an extra dimension to this site. The more than one hundred recordings, though unevenly distributed at this time, are often over two minutes in length. This library of complete pieces allows the user to study early jazz in the best way possible--by listening to it. [JS]

There is probably no greater American institution than refrigerator art: a child creates some work of art, and his or her parents proudly display it on the kitchen icebox. Now the Internet has its own place where kids can post their creations. Using this metaphor, kids from all over the world now have an audience that goes way beyond family, friends, and neighbors.
