The Blue Flame Cafe (1999)

http://www.blueflamecafe.com/

This online biographical encyclopedia of the blues contains entries on almost all of the "great blues singers and singers of the blues." Entries include the pioneers and foundational figures such as Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, and T-Bone Walker; their lesser-known (outside the Blues community) contemporaries; and their more recent musical heirs such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton. Each singer's entry includes a concise overview of their influences, career, and musical legacy. Most are also accompanied by a tantalizingly short (only ten seconds) song excerpt in .wav format. A collection of blues links and an internal search engine round out the site. [MD]

The Bolshoi Theatre [Frames, Javascript] (1999)

http://www.bolshoi.ru/eng/frame.html

The Bolshoi Theatre site is a useful stop for anyone who wants to learn more about this 160-year-old architectural landmark or its performances and players. The site not only provides a calendar for this season (the theatre's 223rd) and brief biographies for the current company, but also offers much in the way of historical background and pictures. The About the Bolshoi section is divided into three subsections -- History, Legends, and Architecture -- which together review the basics of the Bolshoi's past. The descriptions are all overwhelmingly positive, supplying a wide-ranging, if uncritical, vision. We are told, for example, that the success of Fedor Fedorovsky, Academician of Painting, is due in large part to his "revelation of the inimitable national character and the power of the people's creative spirit." Nonetheless, the site is a good introduction to an esteemed institution. [T

http://website.lineone.net/~british_empire/index.html

Created and maintained by Alexander Schulenburg, an honorary Research Associate at the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, this site hosts three resources of interest to scholars of the British Empire and Commonwealth. The first, EmpireHist, is an unmoderated mailing list for discussion of British colonial and imperial history. As with similar academic lists, users are expected to communicate current research, announce related news and conferences and publications, and discuss research and historiographical questions. Subscription information is provided at the site. The second resource is an international register of researchers and scholars in British imperial studies. Entries include name, institution, email address, keywords, and a few sentences on research interests. Finally, the site offers a modest collection of links to related sites and mailing lists. [MD]

The British Invasion -- EB [RealPlayer, Quicktime, Shockwave] (1999)

http://britishinvasion.eb.com/home.html

This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in America, an event that sparked the "second British Invasion" of 1964-67. Soon after their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, a string of British bands sought their fortune on the US pop charts, as American youths clamored for singles, clothes, and anything else hip and new from the old country. This new site from the Encyclopedia Brittanica offers brief histories of the influences, careers, and members of some of the principal British invaders, including the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Hollies. Other resources include RealPlayer music clips, a section on London fashion with a movie of a 1966 Carnaby Street fashion show, band trading cards, and sections exploring the roots of British rock. The BSE Inquiry Home Page [.pdf, Word, .zip] (1999)

http://www.bse.org.uk/

In late December 1997, the British Government initiated an Inquiry under Lord Justice Nicholas Phillips to "establish and review the history of the emergence and identification of BSE and the new variant CJD in the United Kingdom," and review and evaluate the actions taken in response. BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), more commonly known as "mad cow disease," has been linked to at least 30 human deaths from CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), a human spongiform encephalopathy resulting from eating infected beef. In late December 1998, the BSE Inquiry began to publish a number of draft factual accounts based on its investigations. At the site, users can download the full text of these in HTML, Word, or .pdf format. Additional resources at the site include full-text transcripts and witness statements, a dramatis personae and glossary, archived press releases, and a BSE timeline. [MD]

The Cabinet of Doctor Casey--The horror web page (1996)

http://www.halloweenmagazine.com/play.html

As All Hallow's Eve approaches, the Official Halloween Safety Quiz can help all of the little ghosts and goblins practice safe trick-or-treating. The quiz site first presents a list of rules to follow while haunting the neighborhood, followed by a series of questions (some practical, some slightly far-fetched) to be answered. Each correct answer is met with confirmation, while bad guesses bring the bogeyman. While not specifically a Halloween site, the Cabinet of Doctor Casey will get you into that horrifying spirit. Here users can learn about the genre of the classic horror film. There is a large collection of horror film posters, a horror reference (name index, timeline, even an atlas of horrible places!), and, of course, a page of links to Halloween sites, categorized for easy browsing.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in reply to a request by the UN Security Council, has produced this report on the causes and possible solutions to the endemic conflict in Africa. "By not averting these colossal human tragedies [as in Rwanda, Somalia and Liberia], African leaders have failed the peoples of Africa; the international community has failed them; the United Nations has failed them.... The United Nations stands ready to play its part. So must the world. So must Africa." The report first analyzes the historical, internal, external, and economic causes of the problem, and then proceeds to make recommendations with respect to arms trafficking, sanctions, refugees, development assistance, and international business practices. This last feature offers a hyperlinked map of the cave that allows users to move from room to room examining the artwork from an overall perspective or by selecting close-ups of key features of the paintings. (Note: Users may want to adjust their monitor controls to optimize the viewing of these images.) The Cely Papers (1999)

http://www.r3.org/bookcase/cely/index.html

Provided by the Richard III and Yorkist History Server (reviewed in the January 30, 1998 Scout Report ), this site contains selections from the correspondence and memoranda of the Cely family, Merchants of the Staple of Calais, 1475-1488. Edited for the Royal Historical Society by Henry Elliot Malden, these documents offer an interesting glimpse into the world of a wealthy wool merchant family in the late fifteenth century. The correspondence between family members in London, Calais, and Flanders covers business matters in the main, but occasionally reveals attitudes and perceptions on topics of more general import. The comprehensive Introduction to the papers sets the correspondence in its proper context and is highly recommended, especially for non-specialist users or others who have difficulty reading fifteenth-century English. http://www.halcyon.com/FWDP/fwdp.html

This online collection of texts is designed to educate and preserve the history of indigenous peoples. Established by the Center For World Indigenous Studies, this is a nonprofit educational organization. The current collection includes essays, treaties, speeches, and United Nations documents from all over the world. Much of the information is also available for sale in hard copy versions through the CFWIS publications catalog, which is available here. The archive is divided into broad geographical areas; however, with more than 100 documents in some of the geographical areas, it can be hard to scan titles. Thankfully, there is a search engine to help find more specific information such as a precise geographical area or a particular tribe.

Although numerous directories of CGI resources exist, The CGI Resource Index, a product of Matt's Script Archive, Inc., is one of the more useful and informed. Each of the 2,187 links to CGI resources is briefly described, categorized for browsing, and searchable. The resources annotated in this collection range from ready-made, free CGI programs in a variety of languages to tutorials on CGI programming. The most interesting feature this index provides is the ability to rate each of the resources on a scale of one to ten and, for registered users, the ability to comment on the resources. These ratings are available while browsing the resources and can be helpful in choosing a resource to use. While more comprehensive search capabilities would make this site even more useful, it is nonetheless one for Web programmers to bookmark. [CL]

The Chairman Smiles--Posters from the Soviet Union, Cuba and China (1997)

http://www.iisg.nl/chairman/

Drawn from the collection of the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam, this website offers digitized images of both famous and obscure political propaganda posters. The ninety-nine posters are presented on three pages, one each for the Soviet Union, Cuba, and China. Even users with high-bandwidth connections should be patient when accessing these pages, since thumbnails for all thirty-some images load at once. A general introduction heads each page, and artist, title and date are listed for the posters. Each thumbnail links to a larger image of the poster, along with publication and production information and a descriptive caption. Separate pages provide information on the collections and the designers of the posters. Date coverage varies: 1919 to 1938 for the Soviet Union, 1962 to 1968 for Cuba, and c.1950 to 1992 for China. Once ubiquitous, now rarely seen, these post
